I'm not a morning person. At all. So you can see where the struggle comes in on Christmas morning when the girls are up before the sun rises, ready to tear into their gifts. It takes all the strength that I have to drag myself to the couch so they can begin. What does motivate me is a hot cup of tea and a plate full of food that I didn't have to wake up and cook, so make ahead recipes are my favorite this time of the year. What goes good with breakfast tea? Scones, of course! And this year I'm going to plop my rump on the couch and nibble on these Cheddar Cheese Scones topped with Honey Mustard Butter while watching the family open their gifts.

Cheddar Cheese Scones

These Cheddar Cheese Scones are the perfect make-ahead recipe. I'll whip up a batch a day ahead of time, store them in an airtight container, then have my ready-made breakfast waiting for me Christmas morning before I've even cleared the sleep from my eyes.

Cheddar Cheese Scones

These scones pair perfectly with honey mustard butter, which is so easy to whip up. The honey mustard butter adds just a hint of zing to contrast the sharpness of the cheddar flavor, making this a great recipe to go with your morning coffee or tea. Who needs gifts when you can wake up to this!?

Ingredients
1 egg
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 Tablespoon GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 teaspoons dried dill
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
5 Tablespoons cold butter, cut into chunks
4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated

    1. Can I borrow your 3 oldest? All I want for Christmas is to sleep in :P

    2. I hate that they want to sleep in!! I am staying at my oldest son's for the holiday so I can watch my granddaughter wake up to Santa. She's an early riser like her gran, so we'll be getting all of the sleepy heads up together. :) Merry Christmas, Theresa!

Love the grey plate! And who does not like scones, especially freshly baked ones? Hope your family gets you some nice gifts that you will love and treasure!
And since you probably won't be posting over the weekend, wishing you a happy Birthday and prefestive weekend too :) I shall send you a mental hug on Sunday!

    1. Cheese is love!
I'd say you'd have to be insane not to love scones. Blueberry is my favorite, but I'll take them in any flavor.
Yes, I will be away from blogging from now until Christmas. I'll pop in and try to catch up with my favorite bloggers posts when time permits though. I did mail you a little Christmas package, but I fear that it's not going to reach you in time. I mailed it out on the 12th and it hasn't even left the country yet! It took them 10 days to get it to New York where it's still sitting. I could have walked it there faster than that :( Fingers crossed for a miracle that it reaches you before Christmas, but don't hold your breath. Just know I was thinking of you, hoping to spread a little holiday cheer your way ♥

    2. You did? Oh, my, I don't remember when's the last time I had a Christmas gift, LOL, probably a decade ago or something like that :) What a marvellous delight, dahlink :) Hope you will manage to gather your family around you on Sunday and Christmas and enjoy the two occasions in the warmth of their love and attention!

    3. Well, it will be a belated Christmas gift. Just something small that I hope puts a smile on your face. I know you aren't close with your family, but I hope you still manage to find joy in the day. Sending you hugs across the ocean, dahlink!

    4. thank you, dahlink, you know I lurv everything that comes from you! We are the only city, actually, that celebrates this Christmas, the rest of the country celebrates the Orthodox one on January 6th (or 5th I'm not sure), but New Year's Eve has always been the biggest holiday here when nothing works and everybody is partying. I'm off to find you a Facebook cake for tomorrow :P

    5. Loved the Facebook cakes! I'm not huge on New Years. Mariah will be staying in with her boyfriend again this year, so we'll play games and drink punch and eat too much junk, then wake up feeling like hell the next morning lol. The girls love it, but I think I'm getting too old for that shit.

    1. I usually take a nap after everyone has opened their gifts too. We don't have to be to the in-laws until 4, so I can catch a few zzzz's before doing the family holiday shenanigans all over again.

  6. We tend to wait until noon do do anything with gifts. I love a good Christmas breakfast though. These scones look great!

  7. Oh SCRUMPTIOUS I would devour these any time of day. We open gifts whenever everyone wakes up, which takes longer and longer these days!

  11. I never thought to make them cheesy! That sounds good! I typically make dried cranberry scones.

My mom makes us cinnamon rolls. I don't have to worry about breakfast for a few mornings.
