I don't know if it's the same for you, but the stress of the season is starting to build up over here. We're just over 2 weeks before Christmas is at our doorstep and I still have Halloween decorations up. For a girl who used to be so on top of her game, I'm totally failing at the holidays these days. However, Jason and I did trek off into the forests of Colorado last week and cut down our Christmas tree, so at least that was checked off the to-do list. Before anyone (ahem, Dez) gets angry about the tree cutting, it's regulated by the government as part of forest management to keep overgrowth under control, so we didn't willy nilly axe down a tree. There's still so much to do though, from gift buying to cookie baking and even meal planning. My in-laws thankfully will be making the Christmas dinner so we'll end up bringing a dessert. With the stresses of the season already piled high, I've vowed to make the easiest recipe possible and think I've found it in this Pine Nuts and Anise Tart from Golden Blossom Honey.

When I went on the hunt for a sophisticated but simple dessert, it was like Saint Nick himself had a hand in guiding me towards this tart. I don't think I could have found a better recipe to fit the bill if I tried any harder. The Christmas season is a perfect time to break out the pine nuts. The warm, earthy flavor combined with the anise spice makes for the perfect wintertime dessert. Pair it with a Sauvignon Blanc and you'll feel like pinkies up but without spending a fortune. I know that pine nuts are a bit on the pricey side where nuts are concerned, but if you have a Sam's or Costco near you, they have large bags that really bring the price per pound down significantly. I paid around $10 total to make this tart, so in addition to helping relieve some of the time stress I'm feeling these days, it's helping to alleviate the financial stress of the holidays too. If you're in need of a little miracle to help you get through the season with a little less worry on your plate, this recipe is the gift that you've been hoping for.

  1. But still poor tree....
Looks gorgeous, I have never had either pine nuts nor anise but you did such a marvelous decor!
I am acting like it is not holidays at all! I won't cook anything special nor will I probably deck the hall! Xmas can feck itself as far as I am concerned LOL I might change my mind after the 20th, but I doubt it, especially if I get another book to translate next week.

    1. Sadly, I'm right there with you. It took everything in me to put up my holiday decor this year. I am just not feeling holly jolly. My mom just told me she has Covid, so now we won't even see her this holiday. Christmas can definitely feck off. But I do hope you get a new book to translate. Any work right now is good work, methinks!

    2. Poor mama, hope she recovers quickly!
I hope my brother won't put up any lights in front of the house, because it will be so inappropriate given that the neighbours across the street had their 7 year old kid die a month ago, just died in his sleep, terrible. So sad seeing them two in black every morning, especially the papa who loved his son a lot.

  2. It's so elegant and nice. I've had pine nuts on salad before but that's it. And I've had Anise here and there, but never garnished with it (it's so cool looking). What a great addition to any holiday party.

    1. Pine nuts are so expensive, so they are a treat for baking here. Though now that I know I can get a lot at Costco for cheap, we'll use them more, for sure. Anise I use in tea during the winter months. It's not my favorite for cooking, but here and there I do like it in the winter.

  4. I went crazy the week of Thanksgiving and bought a bunch of stuff on Amazon for the grands and then went to multiple TJMaxx, Marshall’s and Home Goods to finish. I’ve made two bar cookies that are family faves and decorating is done, as are personal cards (still have to do hubby’s business people, but that’s easier because I just have to sign our names). I’m on top of my game this year, probably because I’m so stressed about my mom and I feel the need to rush.

    1. I'm sure keeping busy like that is a nice distraction when you have so much already on your mind with your mom. I hope she's settling in now and is doing well!

    1. I love the smell of pine too. Someone just asked me if I wanted to cut down my massive pine tree and I'm like gtfo! It is a bit messy when the sap falls, but oh that scent makes up for it!
