Theresa's Mixed Nuts: Bathroom Makeover Reveal!

Bathroom Makeover Reveal!

For the better part of this year I've been a little M.I.A. in the blogging world. After the holidays, Jason and I decided to tackle renovating our bathroom. To say I hated our bathroom from the moment we bought our house would be a complete understatement. I despised it. Loathed showering in it. Many times I would use the girl's bathroom just so I wouldn't have to look at ours. It's been at the top of my home renovation bucket list since we bought our house 9 years ago, so I was thrilled to fianlly tackle the job, even though it ate into a lot of my free time this year. But, the time spent was well worth it!

Before:

Now, it doesn't look too bad from this picture, just a bit drab and boring. Some of what I hated was the huge white tiles on the floor. They showed every speck of dirt and piece of lint, I felt I was always having to sweep to keep it looking clean. The mirror over the sink is just a slab of mirror glass. No frame and it had icky brown lines forming though the glass. The sink got the job done, but there is no storage whatsoever in the bathroom. We had to keep our towels in the linen closet out in the hallway. Plus, I hated looking at the plumbing behind the sink since it was exposed.

The extra mirrored medicine cabinet by the sink was a huge eyesore. So was the ugly wood door and outdated gold handle. I'm pretty sure the lighting over the sink was the cheapest money could buy, and it was starting to tarnish.

I think the shower was original to the house. I seriously hated everything about it, from the ugly biscuit color to the size. You could hardly turn without whacking your elbows into the walls or glass.

Additionally, there was no air vent, so the hot steam did a lovely number on the paint.

After:

We ripped out the walls and put in new drywall. I decided to put marble tile on the bottom half of the walls, then painted the top half about the same silvery gray color that the original had. We took out the pedestal sink and replaced it with a larger one that could accommodate our storage needs. We hung a matching mirror and replaced the old stainless steel lighting and fixtures with brushed nickel. We removed the mirror from the old medicine cabinet, and I stained a wood panel door to take its place.

I painted the door by the sink white and added brushed nickel hardware to go with the flow of the room. I laid a wood grain looking ceramic tile on the floor, and we added a vent for air circulation so we don't have paint chipping issues in the future.

We found an amazing bargain on this steam shower, snapping it up for under 1/2 its original price (less than $1,000!) though we did have a lot of issues getting it installed to drain correctly. We had to jimmy it around, therefore, it doesn't line equal with the door on the left which is irritating, but livable. Also, you can't tell from the photo here, but we removed the door on the left and turned it into a sliding pocket door for more space in the bathroom.

Overall, I am so happy with how it turned out, I won't be sneaking into the girl's bathroom to shower anymore.

What projects do you hope to knock off your home renovation bucket list soon?

  1. That old shower did look blah indeed. So much better looking now. The steam shower has buttons? Is that buttons up top? What are those for? Do you just get steam and no water? Not sure I'd like that.

    1. You do get water, several spray options actually. The top are lights and one of the water sprayers for the rainfall water option. The steam feature is basically like a sauna. You don't have to use it if you don't want. I only use it here and there to help sweat out toxins when I am feeling blah. Then, you turn it off and shower as normal :)

    2. That would be neat and getting rid of the dumb toxic crap is good. No need for a sauna with that. If I ever get a house have to get me one of those.

  4. oh, dear, what a massive change! I ever so love that dark sync with the cabinet under it and generally the splash of dark wood gave the bathaus an elegant feel!
And just look at that sf shower cabin!
And the wall tiles gave it a more causy feel!
    Love the lamps too!
The only thing I'd change are those thingies on the lil' shelf above the toilet, I'd put some fern there or some leafy plant like that.
The new darker floor is also lovely. You didn't want the same tiles on the floor and the wall?
Bravo for doing it all by yourselves!

    1. I went back and forth over that sink for the longest time. I was worried it would be too dark, but in the end, I ended up loving it.
As for plants on the shelf, I kill them all. I only have 1 out of 3 still surviving on my kitchen shelves, Jason won't let me buy anymore. I have a complete black thumb when it comes to houseplants :(
I didn't want the same floor and wall tiles just to break up the feel of the room. Plus, laying all that marble is what took me forever! I was glad to finally get to the bigger floor tiles just to get the tiling over with. I am making Jason do our kitchen tiling this summer. I am soooo over doing it myself!

    2. there are wonderfully convincing plastic plants too :) I have them plastic circle shaped shrubs all over my imperial balcony and they look totally real... nothing really real survives in the heat and sun up here.
Is that real wood in the shower floor? It takes all the water? How very unusual! I've never seen it!

    3. I need to go to the craft store and see what they have in terms of fake plants. The ones I've come across at other stores aren't very realistic looking.

Yes, that's real wood, water-proof treated. The water flows to the drain under the wood slats. It's not slippery at all, but that damn bench is. The first time I sat on it I about slid right off onto the floor. It's a learning curve.

    4. but what does one clean it with? I mean the wood in the shower? I imagine you can't clean it with regular bathroom cleaners, right?

    5. I don't use chemical bathroom cleaners. I always use a vinegar and water mixture that has a few drops of lemon oil. You could also probably use a vinegar and Dawn dish soap mixture. I know that's a pretty popular shower cleaner option too. I scrub down the shower each day, so there really isn't ever any buildup going on that would require a harsh chemical cleaner. I'll inspect the floor at some point in the future to see if I need to reseal the wood.

  7. I am in awe with that shower...looks like something from the future..I LOVE LOVE LOVE your marble. You did such a good job in there Theresa and an excellent choice on the vanity. Love all the storage. I was actually considering hardwood ceramic tiles for my living room. Were they easy to lay?

    1. They were really easy to lay Karen. Especially after the tedious process of putting up the marble tiles, the larger tiles on the floor were a breeze. I am sure with your diy skills you'll have no problems if you decide to lay them in your living room.

  33. One of the most rewarding aspects of renovating is witnessing how a space can be reinvented. A simple room can become a haven of comfort, a kitchen can be transformed into a culinary oasis, and a bathroom can turn into a spa-like retreat.
