My husband is one of the hardest people to buy gifts for, so when birthdays or holidays roll around, we're usually left scrambling to find him a suitable gift. For someone who doesn't need or want much, I always tell my daughter that food is going to be her best bet on picking a winning gift. I've even started a Pinterest board with his favorite snacks to make it easy to just order online and be done. But this year for Father's Day, what I think he'd truly appreciate the most would be a home cooked meal. He's been on the road for most of this year, and while dining out was exciting for him at first, after awhile he realized nothing beats the taste of a fresh meal made right at home. I've mentioned before that he's a true meat and potatoes kind of guy and this Sliced Sirloin Steak with Red Wine Sauce (from Golden Blossom Honey) paired with some mashed or baby potatoes would be better than any store bought gift or treat our daughter could order for him. Plus, since it's made on the stove top instead of the grill, it's a recipe she can handle just fine with her limited cooking skills.

With minimal ingredients and not a lot of prep, this dish comes together quite easily and fairly quickly, so even if your kids can't be trusted to make this recipe all on their own, you're not going to have to spend too much time helping them get this made from start to finish. Because my husband likes his steaks rare, I did lower the cooking time, but you can adjust cook time as needed to suit your preferences on how rare or done you like your steaks. I do like that sirloin isn't an overly expensive cut of meat, so if you're looking for a Father's Day gift that packs a lot of punch on a budget, this recipe here is all you need to make dad's day special this year.

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons butter

sirloin steak, about 2 pounds

1/3 cup shallots, chopped

  1. Those potatoes look delish and I love how you combined the golden and green colours with the gray plate. I made mousakka today with soy flakes in the filling and spring potatoes.

    1. Mousakka sounds good. I don't make it often enough.

  2. I’m tired of cooking, so that’s a difficult question for me. I guess my two favorite things that I like to eat that I make is my veggie lasagna or salmon baked in the oven with a teriyaki glaze.

    1. I haven't made any kind of lasagna in forever. I may have to add one to my list soon. It's just been too dang hot to even think of turning the oven on this summer.

  3. Now you're speaking the love language of all of my grown children. They do love their steak. Probably my daughter the most, but they all surely do!! Wishing Jason a very Happy Father's Day!

  4. Haha forget the kids. I can't be trusted to cook by myself.

Guess he has all he needs and food is the way. On the road a lot though, ugg, that has to get tiring.

  5. That looks so good.
My favorite home cooked meal is enchilada casserole but I don't eat it much anymore because it's too high in calories and carbs for my diet.
