Strolling Through Salem, MA

One thing I have had on my travel buck list for quite some time is visiting Salem, MA during the Halloween season. But, since we've always had to travel around the girl's school schedule, I had to make concessions and put it on my summer travel itinerary last July. Which was fine. It was still quite the experience wandering through a city with so much history attached, but I still think it would be cool to go in October some day. Anyhow, our hotel was located in Boston, so we decided instead of Ubering in, we'd take the train since it would have been less than an hour to get us there that way and a lot cheaper. We weren't sure how much time we'd need to walk the city, but we only allotted 1/2 a day to cram in what we could. We decided to hit up the town square area first since there is quite a bit to see in such a small area. If you're into witchy types of things, the amount of stores to browse will tie up most of your day. And there are quite a few photo props to keep the kids annoyed at mom who will most definitely usher her kids over for a pic.

Walking through the square I spied a huge Bewitched statue and couldn't resist striking a pose with Samantha.

My friend Robin over at massholemommy.com told me that I absolutely needed to visit the old cemetery located in the town center. It was definitely interesting to walk through and quite sad at the same time. We noticed fresh flowers left behind on many of the old graves and markers.

It didn't take us very long to see all we wanted to see in the town square area, so we decided to take the streets by foot and check out all of the old houses and buildings.

We waffled on going in, but eventually decided to pass on visiting the Salem Witch Museum. But, the building was still pretty cool to look at.

It was another super hot day, so before heading back to board our train, we stopped at Melt for some refreshing treats.

We talked about maybe driving back up for a weekend in October, but once Covid hit we decided that it wouldn't be worth it this year. Fingers crossed we can stomp this virus nonsense into the ground because I really want to participate in the Salem Halloween festivities once in my lifetime! All in all though, it was still a fun little spot to visit. There are quite a few informational tours you can go on, but we were mainly interested in just scoping out the scenery that day. If you're into history, Salem is definitely full of cool spots to learn about some of the dark times people suffered though in US history.

Have you been to Salem, MA? If so, what was your favorite part of your visit? If not, what would you be most interested in seeing there?

  3. I have never been anywhere in New England, but I’d love to see it in the Fall. You look fabulous next to Samantha. I’d love to visit the graveyard and then see if I could find info on some of the departed online. I’m also intrigued by the House of the Seven Gables. Is that from the book?

    1. Yes, it is from the book! We didn't tour it though since we were just there to walk around and enjoy the scenery. When we don't have the kids towing along, I'd really like to go back and delve more into its history!

  6. Thanks for sharing your photos, Theresa. I haven't been to Salem, although I think it would be a fascinating place to visit. Salem has always creeped me out. My mother had me read "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller when I was sixteen. She was taking a literature course at university by correspondence and had no one to discuss her books with. So I got pulled into service, lol! I got chills when I saw your photos of the gravestones with flowers and the word "hanged." It brought my memories of reading "The Crucible," and the trials and hangings back. The hysteria that inflames groups of people and the barbaric things they can do is really scary. I might not go to Salem on Halloween ~ LOL! Take care!

    1. I agree. I will never understand what drives some people to do barbaric things to each other. That was such a horrible time in history for women :(

  7. Salem is one of my favorite places in the US. I always say that I want to move there when I retire. If you ever return during Halloween season, sign up for the touristy things they have going on. You may not feel like a local, but it's worth it. I have crystals and rose quartz strategically hidden throughout my home from our trip to Salem. Love these pictures!! I'm curious who left flowers for someone who passed in 1692. After all that time, most graves are sadly forgotten.

    1. I didn't by any stones, but I should have! I would love to go back without the kids and do the tours. But it was going to add up quick if we were buying tickets to all of the attractions for a family of 5!

  8. Salem sure looks like quite the tourist spot. I think it would be fun to go there on Halloween too. Hopefully the kiddos didn't grumble too much when you got them to stick their heads in haha

    1. They're used to it by now. They can detect a spot I'm going to tell them I want photos from a mile away now. They know the drill and assume the pose without complaint (too often) anymore!

  9. There really are some problems that only ice cream can solve, lol. This looks like a wonderful adventure. I'd like to make it to Boston some day!

  10. That would be an interesting place to visit, especially around Halloween time.
