Big Gay Ice Cream

In honor of National Ice Cream Day today, I'm skipping ahead of a few remaining Iceland travel posts I want to share with you to bring you a tempting treat post instead. Right before we were set to head off to the east coast last summer, a local radio dj was talking about how his family was in New York and they stumbled upon an ice cream shop called Big Gay Ice Cream. He said that his family gushed about it so much, I was intrigued and made a mental note that we would have to visit this place if we had time. Unfortunately we didn't while we were in New York, but thankfully there was one near our hotel in Philly.

With ice cream flavors like Dorothy, Salty Pimp, and Mermaid, I knew this place was going to be fabulous before we even arrived. We walked in on a blistering hot day, so an ice cold treat was just what we needed to beat the heat. Thankfully, they weren't crowded, with only just a handful of people ordering ahead of us. It gave us a little time to browse the menu and the uber fun decor.

Y'all, they had this Golden Girl's Sophia painting that I was totally coveting.

You could order dishes, cones or milkshakes, or you could take home one of these fun, colorful pints. Check out the hilarious flavor names...

Leah ordered a Strawberry Shortcake:

Mariah got the Rocky Roadhouse:

I'm pretty sure Allison got the Rocky Roadhouse, but it looks different from Mariah's. Otherwise, I have no idea what this is. But I also coveted the Rose painting in the background LOL!

Jason ordered a Rufus:

and I opted for a Salty Pimp:

I'm going to have to fully agree with our local radio host's family that Big Gay Ice Cream was totally worth raving about. The colorful decor, the fun ice cream names, and the delicious ice cream treats all make it worth a stop, no matter if you're in New York or Philadelphia.

What Big Gay Ice Cream treat sounds the most tasty to you?

  2. I’ve heard of this because I follow a blogger who lives in Philly. My top choice would be the fluffernutter, not because of the peanut butter but because I love peanuts on my ice cream. The raspberry gobbler sounds good too because I love the combo of chocolate and raspberry.

I love checking out fun food places on vacation.

  3. My first to hear of it. We just found a tasty parlour close to us and I was geeked. I've never been an ice cream girl, but the older I get... the smarter I get? ;) :) Glad you had fun.

    1. I've always been an ice cream girl, even though it's horrible for my tummy. Sometimes you just have to make sacrifices though LOL
