While this basic white girl has been all over the return of pumpkin spice everything season, Jason's been welcoming the return of football and tailgating season. I don't think he cares so much about the game as he does about heading to the stadium to meet up with his buddies and chow down on some football grub. I had initially saved this Savory Sausage and Apple Bake from Golden Blossom Honey with the intentions of making it for Thanksgiving or Christmas breakfast. But, after thinking about tailgating foods that the hubs could easily take to the game to share with his friends, I changed my mind and decided it would be much better served on some buns or rolls, making it one heck of a fall inspired sandwich that would be satisfying and filling before heading into the game.

Savory Sausage Apple Bake

This is a pretty simple recipe that doesn't require a lot of fuss to put together. Once everything has baked nice and golden, pop a lid on your pan, toss some buns into the car, and you've got the fixin's for one mean game day sandwich that didn't require a lot of effort on your part. Even if you're team doesn't win, this recipe is a surefire winner, so you're already coming out ahead by placing this on your game day menu!

Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds mild Italian turkey sausage, cut into 3-inch pieces
2 cups onions, sliced
4 Empire apples, halved, cored, thickly sliced
3 Tablespoons butter, melted
1 Tablespoon GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
1 1/2 teaspoons ground sage
3 Tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
salt and pepper to taste

  1. I never thought to add cooked apples to brats. That does sound good! I haven't made any tailgating foods, but my husband does like football. I probably should.

    1. I know. I was not feeling well and forgot to schedule this one, but left it in drafts instead. Guess we can't always be on point :(

Jason will head to the college stadium where all of the fans gather around campus to drink and/or eat food. It's quite the affair. Many set up tents or have food bars set up in their cars. Some of the college students sell hot sandwiches and such around campus. It's just a way for everyone to get riled up before the game.

    2. But why is it called tail gating? They eat from the backs of the trucks?

    3. I think it's called tailgating because everyone lines the tails of their trucks up, folds the gate down and, yes, sits on the back of the truck while socializing and eating.

  5. I must confess that I giggled at your self claim of a basic white girl. Maybe I giggled because I am the same, who know?! :)

This looks delicious! At first glance I thought it was sausage and peppers, but was pleasantly surprised to read that it's actually apples. This is so different. I'm going to have to try it. :)

    1. No shame in my basic white girl game ;) I also love shopping at Target, coffee house frappuccinos, and drinking wine with my girlfriend lol

This was the first we've heard of this combo, so I was a little nervous to try it out, but my husband loved it. It's a definitely keeper of a recipe.

  6. Sure sounds like a win for tailgating. It probably is more fun to tailgate then watch the game, at least you're the ones standing and sitting around then.

    1. I'd much rather sit around than get tackled by one of those powerhouses on the field!

  12. Yum. This looks delicious. I don’t eat a ton of sausage or hot dogs due to the amount of nitrates in them. But I’d splurge to give this recipe a try.
