Today Is National Clean Up Your Room Day! Bedroom Remodel Revealed!

Like with my travel posts, once again I am late to the party when it comes to sharing remodeling pics. Sorry, ya'll! However, I am not late with National Clean Up Your Room Day, which happens to be today, May 10th. Yes, it's a real thing, and one that I need to be introducing to Allison because that girl's room is nasty. I thought about sharing a post today on getting her room tidied up, but there isn't enough energy bars in the world to get me through her mess right now. So, in honor of National Clean Up Your Room Day, I'm ready to reveal our bedroom makeover. You know, the one I started last November?

Our bedroom is one of the last rooms that needed to be remodeled (we still have a guest room that needs an upgrade, but that's for another day) and since your bedroom is supposed to be your sanctuary, I kept putting it off until I had my dream room imagined. So, for 9 years we slept in a plain, no personality room that I avoided as much as possible:

Plain eggshell colored walls were nothing to look at. Our bedroom furniture was bought on a teenage budget from the bargain bin store 20 years ago and was in desperate need of being replaced. The closet door tracks were messed up and never closed properly. And, don't get me started on how pissed I was when Jason hung that t.v. monstrosity on the wall. I am a firm believer that a television does not go in the bedroom, and one that size? Never!

For my bedroom upgrade I wanted to go with a modern farmhouse vibe, so I drew out my plans and we got to work ripping out the old room. The end result?

The first thing we did was smooth out the textured walls and painted them with Sherwin-Williams Granite Peak. I found some wainscoting at Home Depot that I liked and hung that around the lower portion of the walls and painted them in a high gloss bright white. We then hung shiplap boards on the largest wall in our room and painted those in bright white high gloss paint.

We found a new bedroom set from Furniture Row that Jason liked. It wasn't my pick, but I had to compromise to get the eyesore of a television removed from the room. The bed has pull out drawers which I did like because you can never go wrong with more storage space (which, I must have left the middle one open in the pic. Whoops! Going for a sloppy look today I suppose lol)

Instead of looking for paintings or commercial prints, I found some shabby chic frames at Michael's and hung some of my own favorite personal photos on the walls.

We ripped off the closet doors and replaced them with sliding barn doors. I wasn't sure if I wanted to leave the middle wall a solid wall, but in the end I opted to have Jason build more drawers into the wall (because, again, you can never go wrong with extra storage space). We did tear out the entire closet and extended it by 2 feet to make it more of a his/hers walk-in type set up.

We lined the closet with cedar planks, then added in shelving and clothes racks (don't mind my ugly plastic hangers. I'm too cheap to buy fancy matching ones right now).

On the back of the closet we hung a shoe rack to keep everything neat and tidy.

Finally, we did hang an additional cedar boarding on the ceiling, then installed rustic lighting on each side of the closet. It was definitely a lot more work than I thought it was going to be, but now I totally love my new room and instead of avoiding it, I spend as much time in there as possible. I will eventually replace the carpets, but for now they stay since we have 2 dogs mucking up the house flooring.

Because I want to keep my room fresh and tidy, not just because today is National Clean Up Your Room Day but because I want it to remain my happy place, I made sure to include a Febreze Tower Air Purifier into my room remodel.

Febreze Tower Air Purifier

Our dogs sleep in our room, so we are constantly fighting dust and pet dander. The new Febreze Tower Air Purifier helps us combat those airborne partials by trapping up to 99% of dust, pollen, and pet dander in its powerful, replaceable dual-action filter while simultaneously releasing the fresh scent of Febreze into the air.

The first thing that I liked about the Febreze Tower Air Purifier was it didn't need any assembly. Short of inserting the scent cartridge, it was ready to go right out of the box. It offers 3 different air-cleaning levels as well as a scent dial, so you can adjust the strength of the scent, making it as light or strong as you desire.

The scent cartridge is simple to use. Just peel off the backing, pop the cartridge into the compartment on the top of the unit, and voila! All done and ready to make your room smell fresh and clean.

The cartridges only need to be replaced once a month and the HEPA-type filters should be replaced every 4 months. The Febreze Tower Air Purifier is available in 3 different sizes: Tabletop, Mini Tower, and Tower, so there's a size to fit any need. I have the full sized tower and you can gauge the size of it from my photo below.

I have it tucked into the corner of the room closest to where my dogs sleep to help keep pet dander and odor to a minimum. You can see that the unit blends well with my room decor so I don't have to worry about it messing with the flow of the room. You can find the new Febreze Tower Air Purifier at large retailers such as Best Buy, Walmart, Meijer, and Amazon.

I hope this post has inspired you to remodel your bedroom into your dream retreat, or at least convinced you to get in there and celebrate National Clean Up Your Room Day and get it tidied up a bit.

  2. OMG, boo, I will go to Hell for saying it, but the room really was personality free before :) You did such wonders with it! I do love its unusual shape, I love weird room shapes. And there are those French doors for squirrels to watch the show :)
It looks clean and crisp now! I do believe two big fake green ferns on the cupboards beside both doors would be the cherry on top, though.
OMG how can Lady Jade be messy, isn't she a gurl? Nasty, nasty....

    1. I haven't been impressed with the fake greenery at our craft stores lately. I'll see what they have come Christmastime and will figure out what to do with that cubby hole then.

You would think Allison would be clean being a girl and all, but no. She is gross. Worse than a teen boy. Complete opposite of Mariah, who would know if a carpet fiber was out of place in her room. Allison's idea of cleaning her room is moving a few things around on the floor so a new patch of carpet is visible. Gross. Just gross. I hope she changes her ways when she has a house of her own or I'll be sure to never visit there lol.

    2. Oh, noes, poor Lord Jade will someday wallow in filth :)) You need to marry her off to a butler! I don't mean Gerard....

  3. So much more character now indeed. The light was a great touch. Just make sure the air purifier doesn't give off ozone, nasty if they do. And agree, no TV in the bedroom is the way to go.

    1. I'll have to check into the ozone factor. I don't agree with Oprah on much, but she always went on and on about no tv in the bedroom. That we can definitely agree on.

  7. build more drawers into the wall (because you can never go wrong with extra storage space), but she said, "You do it!" so of course I didn't because I'm still recovering from that 15-ft closet I built her a while ago... :D

Love the new look of that room. Looks fantastic.

  10. I am impressed with (and a little envious of) the transformation of this room. Beautiful! I can't afford a remodel, so I will just grab an air purifier to start off.

  11. WOW! I am impressed, it doesn't look like the same room at all. I love the closet door change out, such a nice detail. I really need to clean up my room, lots of done laundry baskets hanging around waiting to get put away. I think I really need to move the winter clothes out and the spring in now.

  12. I just love how the room came out! How did you come up with the design? I need to transform my whole house, but I'm so bad at coming up with ideas.

  14. Oh my gosh, it's like a TV show remodel, seriously. You did a fantastic job. It doesn't even look like the same room. I love it! I have heard Febreze had this big air purifier. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm interested. :)

  15. A Febreze Tower Air Purifier is what we need for our home! I also need to hit up Michael's for some frames!

  16. I used to own the same air purifier and really liked it.
    I can't remodel my home. I'm a renter.
Wow, wow, wow! The remodel is amazing.
We don't do TVs in our bedrooms either.
