Happy New Year! I took this week off to get the house back in order after the holidays and spend a little time with Mariah before she heads back to college this weekend. Since we are part of the country that is getting hammered with subzero temperatures, we haven't left the house much at all this week, though we are going to brave heading out today to see Jumanji. Fingers crossed it is worth risking frostbite for! I've drank enough hot tea this week to fill an Olympic sized pool, and I haven't thought much about eating anything other than steaming bowls of soup to ward off the chill. On New Year's day I opted to go for the traditional first of the year staples of black eye peas, greens and cornbread in hopes of having a good year of fortune ahead of me, so I tossed together this Ham & Black Eye Pea Soup from Golden Blossom Honey for the family to enjoy.

Black Eye Pea Soup

Growing up in the south, we didn't mess around with eating anything else on the first of the year since we wanted to start the year off right. With this soup recipe, you've got the Peas for Pennies and Greens for Dollars, and if you add a side of cornbread in, you've got your Gold. A well rounded New Year's dinner if there ever was one. I'd say that even if you didn't have this on New Year's Day, it's still early in the month to have a steaming bowl to help with your good fortune this year. And, if it turns out to be just another superstition, at least you still came out a winner by getting to enjoy a delicious meal.

Ingredients
2 (15 ounce) cans black eye peas, rinsed and drained
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (32 ounce) container chicken broth
2 carrots, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, diced
2 tablespoons GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
1/4 pound black forest ham, in a thick slice from deli dept., diced
2 cups fresh spinach leaves, coarsely chopped
salt and pepper to taste

Black Eye Pea Soup

I used dry black eye peas in my recipe by cooking them in a pressure cooker. If you don't have a pressure cooker and still want to use the dry beans, soak them overnight and cook according to package directions before adding them to the soup.

  1. Yes, God forbid you cook the beans yourself, 'tis better from the can nice and poisonous :PPPPP
It does look nice, but I'm more interested in that cornbread, I swear I make everything in my muffin molds.
People usually eat sarma around New Year here, it's sauerkraut leaves stuffed with rice and meat and onions and cooked for hours and hours. It is better than it sounds :) And the main staple of every NY table is Russian salad which is when you mix boiled peas, potatoes and carrots with some boiled eggs, pickles and tons of mayo.
I did see reports of extreme cold in USA, but we are quite the opposite, we are being hit by a tropical wave this weekend (which is Orthodox Christmas weekend) with temps up to freakin' 18*C!

    2. I always cook my own beans. Not only because it's healthier, but I can get a whole bag for the same cost as what a small can costs. Sarma sounds good. I bet it would be great with some seitan mixed in there. I did buy some millet this week to try your recipe, maybe this weekend or next week some time.
Wanna take some of this cold? I'm freakin' over it. My heated blanket has been working in overdrive, I fear I am going to wear it out before this winter is over.

    3. I will try to find you a video for making sarma on YouTube because you need to see how to stuff it and roll it :) It is one of those dishes that are better with each new warming up as you make it in large quantities.
I'm waiting for the millet report :) I made it today as it is my usual Saturday lunch :) Once you start you will cook it once a week instead of rice, you'll see.

Will that massive freeze storm hit you up too over there or just the seaside?

    4. We got some snow and did get hit with a lot of the freeze. Our temps in my city were the lowest in the state and even colder than Antarctica at one point. We are in the 30's this week, so it feel like a heat wave is coming through now lol

  2. Hopefully a dish that can continue to keep you warm indeed, as that cold crap doesn't want to go away. Hermit me is fine with it, but soon I'll have to go out in it and work, ugg. Is winter over yet?
