Homemade Cranberry Sauce

I'm just going to go ahead and shamelessly admit that I love cranberry sauce from a can. Now, I don't eat much of anything from a can these days, but cranberry sauce is one of my very few exceptions. It has been a holiday staple in my family for as far back as I can remember. I used to get so excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner because I knew it was going to be put on the table with the rest of the goodies. We always had the jellied cranberry sauce, never the whole, so when you open it up and plop it into the serving dish, it's still in the shape of the can. I saw this meme on Facebook last week and thought, yep, I'm not alone in my canned cranberry addiction.

As much as I love this edible delight, this year I am trying to add a little class to our Christmas spread, so I thought I would try my hand at making Fresh Cranberry Sauce, getting all fancy using real cranberries and stuff. 

Fresh Cranberry Sauce

Now, this does take a little more time to prepare than just using a can opener, but the payoff is so worth it! I daresay it's even more delicious than the canned version, and the hit of cinnamon and apple cider give the dish an overall warmth. Since it should be served chilled, this dish can be made ahead of time and just kept in the fridge until dinner is ready. It's a perfect recipe to add to your holiday recipe collection.


Ingredients
1 (12 ounce) bag cranberries
2 cups apple cider
1 cup GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons orange zest
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 bay leaf

  1. Them photos are so lovely, you did marvellous job with those orange slices and mint leaves.
    I probably wouldn't like it as I don't do sweet things for dindins :) Here in my Vojvodina, grannies usually make sour cherry sauce for Sunday lunch like that, never liked it myself.
    Speaking of cranberries, I'm so in love with my Cranberry Cinnamon Body Spray from Avon! I did not expect I'd love it so much but it fits me perfectly. They also have body lotion and shower gel in that collection, I might buy the gel too next month :) I'll probably buy vanilla/caramel one from December catalogue and maybe even chocolate/coconut :)

    1. That's the last of the fresh mint I was able to pull from my garden. The rest is all wilted and dead now. I did vacuum seal a few bunches and froze them to use over the winter though which should save some $ because getting mint in the winter is super expensive.

      I bought my mom a cranberry body wash this year too. Smells heavenly, but mine came from Ulta. The vanilla caramel sounds so indulgent! I'd never want to get out of the bath with that scent. You have got to be the best smelling person in all of Serbia!

    2. why don't you just transplant the mint into pots and put them in your kitchen? That is what I did with my bunch of celeries, dug them out with some soil around them, put them into pots and moved them under the window in the basement and I should have fresh celery leaves all winter long, methinks.

    3. Because I have a black thumb when it comes to indoor gardening. Mariah was in the greenhouse club at school and brought me a bunch of herbs which I put in the windowsill and killed every single one of them :( I do good with them during the summer though, outside.

    4. maybe they don't like it in the kitchen if it is too hot there. That is why I put mine in the basement. Maybe if you have a window in the garage you could put them there, or in the hall where the temps are lower.
      PS ate some chocolate cherries yesterday :) nom nom nom... one of them was as big as plum :)

    5. We don't have windows in the hall or garage. I think it has something to do with the humidity in the house. Plants never last long here. I only have 2 left alive from when we first moved in (and we bought a lot!)

      I am happy to hear you had some of the cherries and enjoyed them. As big as a plumb you say? How's come mine never get that big? I think you hit the chocolate covered cherry lottery!

  5. I have never had homemade cranberry sauce, I do love cranberry sauce though. I will have to give this recipe a try to learn what I think of the homemade version of my favorite!

  21. My preference is jellied right out of the can - however, I'm not opposed to eating whole, as long as it's homemade. I've had some really good ones. The main issue is they are usually more tart, and I like a little more sweet.

  22. I love cranberries as it is but having it handy as a bowl of yummy sauce is a great idea. I'm thinking of eating it with my favorite beef pastry or martabak, as we call it in Indonesia
