Dried Cranberry Turnovers for Christmas Breakfast

We had our annual Mahoney family breakfast last weekend, where we invite the extended family over and throw a feast of epic proportions. It's definitely one of my favorite days of the year. Since my brother-in-law brings over his restaurant style waffle maker, waffles are always the star of the show each year but we do add in other breakfast staples to round out the meal. I do like to throw in a new recipe into the mix each year to keep things fresh, and this year I thought I'd add in Dried Cranberry Turnovers from Golden Blossom Honey to the mix.

Fruit Turnovers

These turnovers are really easy to whip up, but look really impressive on your holiday spread. Even if you aren't hosting a Christmas breakfast for the whole extended family, they are great for making ahead of time to enjoy Christmas morning while the kids are opening their gifts. What's nice about this simple recipe is you can use any dried fruit that you like and it will turn out beautiful and delicious every single time. I split mine between dried cranberries and dried cherries and both were a huge success. Cranberry is great for the holidays, but pop in any other fruit during the year for a quick and easy breakfast idea.

Ingredients
1 frozen puff pastry sheet (from a 17 1/4 oz package), thawed
3 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
2 tablespoons GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
1/2 cup dried cranberries or cherries
1/4 cup golden raisins
1 egg, beaten
2 teaspoons sugar

  1. they do look gorgeous and you did amazing photos combining those lovely golden and red colours, so fresh and lovely. What do cranberries taste like fresh? Are they soft or meaty and hard?
Hope you will have a lovely festive weekend with your family, dear! I shall spend mine working and stressing as I have to check one of my edited translations which has just arrived from the editor. Good news is that I got something massive to translate next and then I'm off to Cassandra Claire again!

    1. Fresh cranberries are not good. They are hard and tart. They definitely need to be cooked down with some form of sweetener. The only time I use them in raw form is with my smoothies, but those get blended really fine and I add in honey to sweeten up the drink.
Hurray for a busy work schedule! Glad to hear you still have lots of works lined up through the new year. Which Cassandra Claire are you translating this time? It's been a few years since I've read her, so I need to catch up on her newer books myself.

    2. Hope you will have a lovely Birthday tomorrow, wishing you a happy one here first :)

I will be doing her Dark Artifices saga, which has two parts so far, my old publisher who did Infernal Devices was supposed to buy it but opted not to and then my new publisher decided they want to buy it when they saw I did her works before so that will now be their leading project next year :) I will also be doing something else very massive which I will announce next week :) I'm now officially doing almost all of world's most famous YA authors (not in the literal sense although I wouldn't mind if we're talking about Pierce Brown LOL)

    3. Thank you so much! I'll be spending it baking cookies and grocery shopping. A real blast, eh?

I haven't read Dark Artifices, but I'm sure I'll get to it some day. My niece has been on my to start The Lunar Chronicles, so I'll probably be reading those next. I just finished reading Stephen King's IT. I can usually get through a book in a day or two, but that damn thing took me 5 weeks. I just couldn't focus on it for long lengths of time.

I can't wait to hear your massive announcement! I am so happy you finally have a publisher who respects you and loads you up with good works!

  2. Great that it can work with a dried fruit one likes and can be used to eat and watch the kiddos rip and tear. I don't even think we have enough family left for a big breakfast lol unless you count the cats.

  9. Puff pastry is a treat I have never made. I would have to make this the night before and heat it up. You make it sound so easy, but my baking skills are not that good.

  20. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! We kind of skipped breakfast and just had a big afternoon meal. We have had cinnamon roll french toast in the past, which is totally amazing, as well as a breakfast casserole with sausage, eggs and other yummy stuff. But - it was kind of hectic, so we didn't really have time to fix anything fancy this year.

    1. I think keeping it low key sometimes is just the ticket to keeping your sanity on Christmas morning. Cinnamon roll french toast sounds yummy! I've seen people put cinnamon rolls in the waffle maker and make waffles that way. I think we might try that next year.
