Voodoo Doughnut Put A Spell On Me

The day after we arrived in California, we had a fun filled day at Universal Studios Hollywood. We kept seeing people walk by with big pink boxes. Of course, anything pink and girly always grabs my attention, so I had to know where these boxes were coming from. Once we saw a huge line wrapping around Voodoo Doughnuts, we knew we found the source. Since I live in the Midwest, I had never even heard of Voodoo Doughnuts before, but the bright pink boxes and huge voodoo doughnut statue outside, I was immediately hooked and knew I wasn't leaving without a box of my own.

The store's tagline is "Good things come in pink boxes". They sure aren't kidding because I have never tasted so much deliciousness coming from a box before. I'll be honest and say that the signature voodoo doughnut is what drew me in. I mean, how cute is this guy? A little voodoo doll doughnut with a pretzel rod stake sticking out of his chest. And the raspberry jam filling is such a nice touch to finish the poor guy off.

While I was only going to buy that adorable little doughnut, after reading the menu, I couldn't resist having a box filled with more of their tempting doughnut flavors. There are a ton to choose from, but we stuck with:

Butterfingering: chocolate cake doughnut topped with vanilla frosting and Butterfinger candy bar chunks

Marshall Mathers: plain cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and M&M candies

Dirt: my favorite! A raised yeast doughnut topped with vanilla frosting and Oreo cookies

Old Dirty Bastard: Jason's fave. A raised yeast doughnut topped with chocolate frosting, Oreo cookies, and peanut butter.

We were actually surprised that the prices were very reasonable. The doughnuts range in price from about $1.50 for the basic doughnuts to $3 each for the specialty flavors. The ones we got were about $2.50 each and well worth it.

There were so many delicious looking options, it was hard to narrow it down, but I don't think you could go wrong with any of the choices. There were even a few naughty doughnuts on the list that had Jason and I giggling.

You could even buy a coffin full of doughnuts (3 dozen) for $130. This would make such a fun Halloween party treat, I think!

The store itself was so charming. All decked out in girly touches and lots of pink, it was totally my jam!

I was pretty bummed to find out that they are only located on the west coast and have no plans of branching out further. I almost begged them to open a store in Chicago because I'd totally make the 2 hour drive from my house quite often to load up on these delightful nuggets of yum. If you find yourself on the west coast, I highly recommend stopping in and loading up on some pink box deliciousness for yourself.

Have you ever had Voodoo Doughnut? What doughnut would you like to try first?

Haven't had me a doughnut in ten years or more, we don't have them sold here, but I think I'd like the M&M one!

    1. We are an odd bunch here. I think they would be fun to serve for Halloween breakfast, but since there are none close to me, it was cold cereal today.

You don't make your own doughnuts? I have me a doughnut tin that gets a lot of use. I love to sit down with a doughnut and a hot cuppa tea. It's a mighty nom nom treat!

    2. Hope you enjoy Halloween today, dear, are you taking Ally trick or treating or is she too big for it?

    3. She stayed home and passed out candy for a little bit, then she went down a few of our streets and collected candy with my best friend's daughter. We had quite a few kids stop by this year. Normally they skip our street because it's dead end and they don't like to waste their time coming down, but I ran out of the full size bars that I bought within an hour and had to pull out my emergency stash of candy. Word must have got out that we were passing out the good stuff lol

    4. serves you right for not saving the emergency stash in case of an apocalypse :))

  3. Wow, I never knew such a place existed. They sure go all out and have fun. A doughnut for everyone. Sounds like, and looks like, they have quite the thriving store too.

    1. Thriving indeed. That's why I was surprised they aren't going to expand to large cities, like Chicago. They'd do quite well there, I'm sure!

  4. Holy moly! Those aren't donuts, those are spooky works of art. They look almost too good to eat. But I would still eat them...

    1. I thought the same thing. I didn't want to eat them because they were so pretty, but I figured my belly would like to get to know them too ;)

  14. I've heard about Voodoo Donuts and it's been on my list of places to visit and donuts to try. I didn't know there was one near Disney though. I've only heard of the Seattle location. Thanks for sharing!

  20. Oh they look yummy! I've never heard of them before, but I've also never been to the west coast...maybe one day. ;) We have a local donut place that has all sorts of crazy options, but nothing as fancy as the pink box! I love donuts, but tend to stick to the plain options - chocolate glazed, jelly or plain glazed...although I would try out that little Voodoo doll one for sure - too cute!! And that butterfinger one looks good too.

    1. I am usually one to stick to the safe, plain options too, but girl, these doughnuts were outta this world good. Even 4 months later, I am still craving the Butterfinger and Oreo doughnuts they had.

    2. That butterfinger one DID look yum! I'm not a huge oreo fan - when I was younger all I wanted was cookies and cream flavored items...and I seriously wore myself out on it, to the point I completely avoid it now.

  21. I love Disneyland, Theresa! I used to live about one half mile from Disneyland in the 1970s and went there often. I'm sure you and your family had a blast! The Voodoo doughnuts looked like so much fun. My mouth was watering as I looked at them. Pass the bacon maple please! Have a good one!

    1. Goodness, you must have had a grand time living so close to Disneyland! How neat to live within walking distance. I would have been there every day, they would have been sick of me lol. Have a great day Fundy Blue!

  22. This is the first I've heard of VooDoo Doughnut. I'm not sure I'd stand in a long line for one but they sure do look delicious. The decor is rockin' and I'd totally eat my fair share of those Butterfinger doughnuts.
