Theresa's Mixed Nuts: Will Work for Iced Coffee

Will Work for Iced Coffee

It's always been a challenge trying to get Allison to do more than her assigned chores each day. She does what's marked down, and if you ask her to do anything more, expect to hear lots and lots of complaints.

We had a really lovely Saturday a few weeks back, which was perfect for getting some yard work done, but I knew if I asked Allison to help, it would be met with a lot of resistance. So, I did what any sneaky mom would do... I bribed her. The girl has a serious frappe addiction, and the mere mention of Starbucks has her drooling like a fool. Just offering her a frappe for picking up the sticks in the yard got her moving faster than Speedy Gonzales.

It took her 2 hours, so I'd say she definitely earned every penny of that overpriced beverage! Don't get me wrong, I love a good frappe too, but I'll go to Dairy Queen for their $2 happy hour prices instead of shelling out $5 at Starbucks. Sadly, they don't offer them for $2 on the weekends, so I came home and concocted my own Cookies & Cream Frappe, which tasted pretty darn good, especially for how little it cost me to make myself at home.

Ingredients

1 cup frozen coffee cubes (place strong brewed coffee in ice trays and freeze until solid)
1 cup half and half
2 tbs sugar
2 tbs chocolate syrup
1/4 cup chocolate wafer cookies, crushed
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

Directions

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Pour into glass, top with whipped cream, additional crushed chocolate wafer cookies and mini chocolate chips. Serve immediately.

How do you motivate your kids to do extra chores around the house?

  1. Me too normally use to tell my kid like this to get a work done by him...

  2. tell Allison I'm not happy hearing about her not working if not paid :) What is it with kids these days? I was never paid to do anything as a child, did not even have any pocket money and still did everything around the farm. Same with kids in the school who are like 'what do we get if we do that task?' You don't get a smack on the face if you do it that is what you get :)

    1. Both girls have several mandatory chores they have to do each day that they don't get paid for. Anything after that, like the yard work, she does expect to get paid for, and honestly, I wouldn't feel right if I didn't reward her for doing extra :) She learns that the daily duties are expected because you are part of this family. The extra teachers her that if you want more in life, you have to work for it. I think it's a good balance :)

    2. 'tis good as long as they don't star manipulating or blackmailing :) I remember that back when I worked as a teacher the kids would go like PROFESSAH, IF WE'RE QUIET AND WELL BEHAVED DURING THE LESSON WILL YOU LET US OUT FIVE MINUTES EARLIER? And me was like IF YOU'RE QUIET AND WELL BEHAVED DURING THE LESSON I MIGHT NOT KEEP YOU FIVE MINUTES LONGER :))

    3. Oh, those pesky kids will do anything to try to get out of class early, won't they? We tried pulling that same stuff when I was in school. It goes to show, tricks don't change much from generation to generation lol

    4. yes, and imagine having last weekly lessons with them (which, in my country where kids go to school in two shifts, the morning and the afternoon one) is fifth and sixth lesson on Friday evenings :) That would be around 7PM on Fridays!!! :)

    5. Ugh! What a crummy way to start the weekend! Our kids never go later than 3PM here, but sometimes Allison doesn't get home until 6PM because of her after school activities, but they never run that late on a Friday.

  3. Starbucks is certainly over-priced, and I don't even drink coffee to know that.

  4. I went to Starbucks once or twice. I paid a lot for just a regular coffee. I just can't justify paying that much. It drives me nuts when students come in with a Starbucks often, and complain about how they should get everything for free. There is a handful of them every year.

On a better note I love your recipe.

    1. You should see the line at Starbucks near Notre Dame! Those college kids definitely love their coffee!

    2. I know. That's fine. It just bothers me that they go out for breakfast, lunch, and get coffee. They complain so much about not being able to afford art supplies, and things they need for class.

    1. Charge a lot they do! But as long as people keep paying those prices, they can definitely get away with it!

  6. We are a Dunkin Donuts family, but we love our frappes - but I am confused because frappes have ice cream in them. What you made sounds awesome, but it's not a frappe. Well, at least not around here :)

    1. I don't think anyone here uses ice cream in frappes. Here's the definition of a frappe from About Home: A frappe is an iced beverage that has been shaken, blended or beaten to produce a tasty foam and refreshing blended drink which is served cold, often with whipped cream and toppings. You can add ice before or after beating the coffee and custom additives such as sugar, milk, vanilla and sweet sauces.

Now, I want to try one of your Boston Frappes. I think it would be amazing with ice cream!

  7. I can't see paying Starbucks prices for anything. I have friends that go there all the time, and I know they could probably pay a mortgage with what they're paying out.

  8. This would have been a great way to get ,y daughter to do extra chores too. She was addicted to iced coffee.

  11. Oh wow. This is a definite must try for this summer! We have a DQ somewhere but I'd rather stay home and make it.

  12. That looks delicious! I motivate my kids by giving them special perks. Usually $5 here and $5 there, or a trip to the dollar store seems to work! - Jeanine

  13. Just that easy!! I would make this in an instant. In fact, at some point I may. Right now I'm cutting back on sugar. I'm not dragging...in fact, I feel great, but I'm experimenting to see if I feel even more energetic without it. :)

  14. That sounds delish indeed and I might have to try it. Bribing always works at our house when it comes to chores, but there are times when I just have had enough and take stuff away.

  15. I remember my time when I was a student in Melbourne and I worked part time there in SB cafe :)

  16. That frappe looks so good. I don't think I've had one ever.

  17. Yours is likely only a fraction of the calories too - very low fat. Smart lady!

  18. That's a good way to reward her! lol My son is all about his video games. So if he wants to have extra playing time he needs to do chores. When I was pregnant I made ice coffee all the time! Cheaper for sure!

  19. Mmm yum I will work for frappe too!! I used to drink them every other day but have cut down a lot now since they are so high in calories. Still love a good cup of maccha or caramel frap though! Christmas flavours are so yummy too!

  20. My teenager loves Frappe too and I think I should bribe her with it. The recipe looks good and if it encourages my daughter to do her chores, I am all for it.

  21. It’s always great to have a little something up your sleeve to use with kids! Well played. Now, I can’t stop staring at this recipe and wondering if I can convince my husband to try to make it for me this weekend. I may have to offer something in return, like cooking breakfast on Sunday, but it would be well worth it. This sounds and looks delicious!

  22. I'd sure like to take a sip of that!

  23. So I am brewing coffee right now to freeze for tomorrow. I am addicted to these ice coffees but definitely not the price. Great recipe Theresa!
