The Spirit of Giving All Year Long #EveryDayCare

Community outreach and volunteer work is something that my family is passionate about. Every weekend we volunteer with one of our local animal rescues, helping to find permanent homes for shelter cats and dogs. We also look for little ways to help in our community throughout the year by participating in community events or donating money or supplies to various causes. People seems to be more in a giving and volunteering spirit during the holidays, but you can also make a difference in your community all year long with the Whirlpool Every, day care project.

When you are involved with Habitat for Humanity, you are helping to make a positive impact on lives in your own community. In the U.S. alone, 48.5 million people are living in poverty, and with the rising cost of living, many workers are struggling to afford decent housing. Habitat for Humanity builds simple and affordable houses to low-income families with no-interest, no-profit loans. You can volunteer your time by helping to build houses, make a monetary donation that will go towards building supplies, or even drop off your old, usable housing materials (doors, hardware, cabinets, ect.) to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your neighborhood which will be resold to gain funds to build more Habitat houses.

I just recently learned that Whirlpool and Habitat for Humanity have had an ongoing partnership for 16 years! The Whirlpool brand donates a new refrigerator and range to every Habitat for Humanity house built. Since 1999, Whirlpool has donated more than 168,000 appliances to new Habitat homes!

I was really pleased to learn this information, since we have been longtime supporters of Whirlpool appliances. Every kitchen appliance in our home has always been the Whirlpool brand. They offer fantastic products at impeccable values! As you know, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so quality appliances are a must for me. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I want to share one of my favorite holiday side dishes that we cook in our Whirlpool range each year.

Party Potatoes!

Ingredients

1 medium sized white onion, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
1 bag (30 ounces) frozen hash browns
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 cans (10 ounce) condensed cream of chicken soup
1 container (16 ounces) sour cream
2 cups colby jack shredded cheese
2 cups Corn Flakes
4 tablespoons melted butter

Directions

Saute onions in one tablespoon of butter until soft (about 4-5 minutes)
Mix hash browns, 1/2 cup butter, soup, sour cream, onions and cheese together
Place mixture into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish
Combine Corn Flakes and melted butter, then place evenly on top of potato mixture
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, or until heated through

This recipe would be a great way to nourish your community this holiday season, or all year long! Bring it along to any holiday potlucks, or take a batch to a neighbor in need!

  4. Well we just raked up leaves for 1 person that we don't know. I let others go in front of me in grocery lines if they have less stuff. Mica gets random carts in the parking lot to take to the front of the store, or in the cart holders. We donate canned goods. If my sister with Emerson is having issues I help with her family.

    1. There's a year round need for food donations, so I love that you regularly donate to the food pantry. Hunger is such a huge issue in the US, which always surprises me, since we are a country of plenty.
