Theresa's Mixed Nuts: Woodland Vandals

Woodland Vandals

As we were pulling into our driveway last year, we noticed one of our Halloween tombstones was broken clean in half. Our first instinct was to blame the kids or one of their friends from the neighborhood. Of course, no one would fess up, so we pulled up our security video. To our surprise, we saw a squirrel running through our little graveyard, and bam! He karate chops the tombstone with force that would impress even the strongest of black belts.

Woodland creatures are furry and cute, but don't let them fool you. They are the biggest vandals out there! We've had our fair share of destruction from them over the years, so maybe the mean streak in me was a little delighted that for once, they decided to pick on our neighbors. They are on vacation and asked my husband to keep an eye on the house. I think they are going to be a little ticked when they come home to find a little vandal has done a number on one of their wooden columns on their porch.

bird, damage

bird, damage

Look at that evil little woodpecker, pecking a hole bigger than it's head right through the column. Despite our best efforts, this is one little vandal that is determined not to be run off.

Have you ever had any property damage from woodland creatures?

  2. I don't think I have. Tell your neighbors to get a owl statue from a pest control section. No bird will dare enter the area.

    2. This is why I was scrolling up, to find a new attempt. I just wrote owl on the shopping list. If it works and ours moves to another spot, we'll get another owl. I'll be the owl lady of the neighborhood, lolol OY! I'm not even kidding.

  4. I was told by an older fellow that woodpeckers won't peck just to peck. They are usually after bugs or grubs,. But who knows... this bird needs to find a new home.

    1. I always thought that too Terry. That they were pecking for termites or whatever. Now I wonder if the neighbors have termites in those columns? I'll have to bring that up to them.

    2. Can't hurt to have it tested. We thought that too and got our house tested immediately when our woodpecker came. We got a clean bill of health. I worry he'll make holes that other things will like!! We go up and fill the holes, but our house is high in the back and it's no easy job.

  7. What a pesky varmint!!! They make the hole big enough to get inside to have a shelter, I've heard. That is really funny about the Tae Kwon Do Squirrel { ah chaw }

Great news about the Trunk or Treat! Did I tell you, me and another gal at my church are wanting to spear head ours? It isn't on the Calendar. My ydd is counting on mine because her Ward's was lame last year. hahahaha.

  8. We have had one for two years straight. We go out to chase him off and he sits high up in the tree and gives us biting chirps. The woodpecker gets mad at US!! We've tried several things to get rid of him, hot paint, mirrors, some stupid looking thing that floats in the wind. He just changes positions on the house. He really does cause quite a bit of damage. The woodpecker is not our friend, lol

    1. I am surprised that you are getting hit with the woodpecker too Rosey! I always see them in the trees, never on houses causing damage. We were shocked to see this one pecking away at their columns. They certainly aren't the friendly kind like Woody Woodpecker lol.

  9. That is amazing. Over here woodpeckers usually make holes in trees preferably coconut trees. Guess what? I always looked at the cuteness of squirrels. They are not in Jamaica.

  10. That's crazy. When I was a kid we had possums and coons get into my Dad's pond. They would disturb the plants and eat the fish. He got a live trap. He'd turn the animals loose by a river.

  13. I put a nice fake (?) owl in front and back and never been bothered again - knock on wood - lol!

  14. I've had raccoons do the most amazing gymnastics in order to swing from the chimney to the attic vent and squeeze inside to get a nest going. Mama (me) wasn't happy.

  15. Oh no! lol. Those little vandals...they really are pesky...yet cute ;) Don't think he'll find any bugs or worms in that column! lol

  16. Yes!!! Those cute little critters can be very destructive. We have tree damage from deer and porcupine quite often. I only have to shout and they scurry off but I do have to let my presence be known. This year the voles got in my garden. What a mess :(

    1. OMG Karen, those moles are the WORST! Actually, I think this year the bunnies did quite a bit of yard damage too though. While the kids were oohh'ing and ahhh'ing over how cute they were, my husband was silently praying for a hawk to come scoop them up lol. They left some really big holes in the yard!

  17. Ya know, I honestly don't even know if we have woodpeckers around here. If we do, they must only stick by trees like Woody :) And that sounds like a good thing!
