Homemade Birthday Tees

I was browsing through Mariah's Wanelo list before her birthday this year, and she had a ton of tee shirts listed as gifts she wanted. Some of them were running $25 or more. I'm cheap. I don't want to pay that much for a tee shirt. Jason suggested I try making her similar shirts using my Silhouette Cameo. Honestly, I've never used it for more than cutting out vinyl stencils and a few paper crafts, but I felt confident it couldn't be that hard. I was right, and now a new hobby is born. I picked up a few blank tee shirts for $4 at Meijer, then went to town crafting!

I'm a little late to the party showing these since her birthday was last month, but better late than never, right?

I was able to make these 3 shirts for what the cost of what 1 would have been!

Since I didn't pack my Silhouette back up to store away in my craft room yet, I decided to make her a belated birthday coffee mug the other day. Trying to find a plain blue coffee mug was a pain, but I found this one for $6 at J.C. Penny, and made her a The Fault In Our Stars mug.

The Fault in Our Stars Cup

I have used vinyl on plastic tumblers before and have had no problems with it coming off in the dishwasher. However, the first set of stencils I did on this mug started to peel off when ran through a cycle. I would recommend hand washing any glass/ceramic dish you apply vinyl to, otherwise you'll be reapplying another set of your stencils to your project.

Do you like to make your own custom tee shirts? What has been your favorite handmade gift you have ever given or received?

  1. Those look great! I've never done anything like that, although it does look like something fun. Next week Elliott and I are going to start working on an autograph book for our upcoming Disney World trip. While we have the Cricut stuff out, I might consider doing something fun for him like that. I'll have to look around for some ideas and see where to buy stuff. Since we are remodeling, my Cricut isn't usually very accessible right now.

    1. When are you going Carla? We are going in October. The girls still have pages left over in their autograph book we bought last time, or I would totally have them make one of their own.

  2. I recently made a few tie dye shirts. 2 were failures, and the other 2 came out alright. So much dye to work with though. The kit had some cheap gloves, but I still got some on me. Actually a lot, so much blue dye in fact that I became fluent in smurf.

    1. That dye does suck to work with. Mariah did a tie dye shirt for Halloween last year and it was messy!

  3. Yes, better late than never. T-shirts always come in handy. I used to love making tie-dye shirts, like Adam. But yeah, the dye is strong stuff. There was also silk-screening. That was fun. I wonder if anyone does that anymore. (?)

    Have a nice weekend, Theresa.

    1. Silk-screening was huge, wasn't it? My cousin used to do that, but he liked to make naughty tee shirts, so I never got any of his designs lol.

    1. Actually, your Disney shirts you bought on Etsy last Halloween gave me the inspiration to try making my own. You have a Cricut don't you? You can make some if so. It was really super easy!

  5. Did she like the presents? :)
My own parents never spent more than 10 bucks on me, methinks..... Which is why me is cheap too.... I'm just not used to anyone, even me myself, spending any money on me LOL

    1. She loved them! My mom didn't spend much on us either. Being a single mom to 4 kids, there wasn't much left, but she did always make the best out of what little money she had for us. I don't like to spend on myself either, and I always feel weird when others do, even my husband lol.

  11. Those are fun! You did a great job! Did the t-shirts wash well? I usually use fabric paint on the ones that I've made. It stays on.

    1. Yes, they did wash and hold up well. No cracking in the designs whatsoever. You are supposed to wash and dry the shirts before ironing on the transfer, to reduce the chance of the shirt shrinking which would affect the design.

I always love your fabric paint shirts you make the boys. I am afraid I am just not that good with a paintbrush though :)

  15. Cutting a stencil and using ceramic paint would have worked on your mug. The vinyl tends to peel with the heat!

    1. You should Alissa! Though your painted shirts always turn out so awesome, I am not sure how much better they would be with vinyl cut out from the machine.
