We're trying something new around here, and that's getting Jason more involved in the kitchen. It's not that he's a horrible cook, but the brunt of our in-home meals has always fallen on my shoulders since it was just an unspoken agreement that I liked to cook, so that was going to be one of my household jobs. But as my small business grows and I have less time these days, he's had to step up a little more around here with the chores. I'm starting him off slow, usually letting him take over the kitchen for weekend breakfasts. Thanks to Pinterest, so far he's gotten biscuits & gravy and knock off egg mcmuffins perfected. I'm not ready to let him go full on Betty Crocker just yet, so we're still sticking to easy recipes that have minimal ingredients and won't leave my kitchen looking like bomb went off by the time he's done. Last weekend the menu consisted of Quick Crescent Sticky Buns from Golden Blossom Honey.

The nice thing about these sticky buns are the use of refrigerated crescent dough. I don't think the husband is quite ready to venture off into dough making from scratch, so this was a great recipe to help build his confidence in the kitchen without messes or errors to worry about. I will say that we wanted the crescents to have the more traditional roll shape, so instead of rolling them fat to thin end, we filled then reverse rolled, starting with the tapered end and working our way to the bigger end. Then, we laid them vertical and flattened them down using our fingers until they resembled a traditional sticky bun. The end result was perfection. I ended up liking these sticky buns more than store or bakery bought and definitely had more than my fair share from the batch. It's a keeper recipe and one that I'll be requesting frequently when it's Jason's turn in the kitchen.

Ingredients

1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 (8 ounce) tube refrigerated crescent roll dough
8 teaspoons chopped dates

  2. I do everything but the grilling. Hubby did get a smoker a few years ago and will use it twice a year to make ribs, pulled pork and brisket which we freeze for lots of meals.

    1. Jason has only used his smoker and deep fryer and I did all the grilling and cooking. He'll do a few pork loins and freeze bags of pulled pork as well. I'm not sure if he ever did ribs though, but now that he's getting into playing for recipes, he very may well try it this summer.

  3. Well, he certainly did a marvelous job with them, hooray for Lord Jace!
We don't have ready made dough here in shops, only puff pastry.
My late father was a cook, as you know, but he rarely cooked for us, maybe just for May Day and New Years and even then it wasn't anything overly special. I cannot stand my moma's food, it often left me with tummyache and poisoned, so I've started cooking myself very early. I cannot remember when was the last time I ate something that somebody else prepared. Probably a decade or so.

    1. With our current climate, we don't have any ready made dough in the stores right now either. I was lucky I had a tube in my fridge. But puff pastry would probably be a fun twist on this if that's all one could find.

I suppose when you do something all day, you don't want to come home and do it some more. It's like when people ask me to make them something in my spare time (what spare time? lol). Mariah asked me to make her a sign for her wall at Thanksgiving and my cousin asked me to make him a Christmas sign, and here it is February and I haven't made either of them a thing yet. *sigh* So I can see why your cook dad didn't want to come home and do it for you, even though I think feeding your family would be more rewarding than feeding strangers.

  7. Ohh I forgot how dirty the guys can make the kitchen, lolol. It's awesome that he's stepping up to the plate to help, and even more awesome that your business is so busy!! Looks like he did a good job on the sticky buns. It's looking like something that would be perfect to make when I get a sweet tooth.

    1. It's the whole reason he was never allowed in the kitchen. Like how do men make such a mess when cooking. There's a running joke that Jason's messes are comparable to a 4 year old who "wants to do it myself!" LOL
