I love vegetables year round, but there's something about summer vegetables that really hit the spot. I like to toss them with a bit of oil then throw them on the grill until they start to get a little charred, then I'll sprinkled on some garlic salt for an added boost of flavor. This time of the year we eat a side of vegetables with almost every dinner, so there's only so many times you can eat them tossed with oil and garlic before you want to shake things up a bit. And that's perfectly fine to do! I saw this Honey Lemon Basil Sauce on Golden Blossom Honey and thought we'd give it a whirl with some steamed veggies this week for a change of pace.

I was half expecting this to be a bit 'in your face' with favor given that lemon and basil are both powerful when it comes to flavor in their own right. But, to my surprise, this was actually a very light, mellow sauce that complimented the vegetables instead of covering up their natural flavor since the honey and butter help to tone down the strong notes in the lemon and basil. While this isn't a salad dressing, I still think it would make for a lovely addition to salad or even poured over grilled chicken this summer. I doubled the recipe since the recipe only makes 1/2 a cup, then stored it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, giving it a little shake in the bottle before use again. This sauce is made with 5 simple pantry staples, so I'm sure we'll be returning to this recipe quite a few more times this season as more veggies continue to pop up in our garden.

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons chopped onion
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon basil, crushed

  1. Looks nom and colourful! I'm currently adding grated lil' beet to my morning scallion and tomato salad. But I do ever so hate grating stuff as I always grate the top of my finger too.

    1. Allison refuses to grate anything for me. She got a nasty little scrape a few years back from grating cheese and hasn't touched a grater since.

  2. This sounds delicious!! I'm going to try this and throw some pasta in there too for a quick pasta salad. Our garden is the same things we always grow, Japanese eggplant, bell peppers, basil, and cherry tomatoes. :)

    1. Nothing wrong with sticking with what works! I wish I would have done bell peppers this year. We sometimes do banana peppers too, but nobody but me eats those here, so I skipped planting them this year.

  3. We were supposed to have a big hardscape project done, which bordered our garden, so we didn’t do a garden this year.we do have some pots on the deck and one new thing we’re trying is banana peppers. So far, they are not pretty. Too much rain!

    1. My banana pepper plants usually are the best growers in my garden, but I skipped planting them this year. I'm sorry yours are dismal. Too much rain will definitely do them in.

  5. My husband grew less this year. He still has more than most. He overgrew tomatoes in the past, so less of those. We had a storm that nailed his corn to the ground, but the are trying to creep back up.

We make a lot of salads + dressing.

    1. Travis has such enviable garden skills. It sounds like he's super busy lately though, so I can see why he wanted to scale back on the garden this year. Hope your corn pulls through!

  9. My son did the cooking for us for a bit, and everything was so good. He said the secret its having the right sauce. I do believe he's right, and this one sounds delish! Huge veggie lover here... raw, cooked, in sauce, no sauce, you name it, I'm all in.
