Fjadrargljufur Canyon

It doesn't matter where you go in Iceland, you aren't going to get anything less than a breathtaking view no matter where you look. With that in mind though, I did do a lot of extensive research on exactly what I wanted to see before we arrived since we were on very limited time of only 1 day to take in what we could during our layover. Most of what I wanted to see were locations that had waterfalls, but when I came across Fjadrargljufur Canyon during my search, it promptly got added to the list of stops on our itinerary.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon

The canyon is 330ft deep and runs 1.2 miles long. It dates all the way back to the Ice Age, almost 2 million years ago!

We didn't make the trek, but if you walk the marked pathways, at the end of a 1 mile hike on the eastern side of the canyon, you'll find a waterfall located on the western canyon which will be visible from an observation platform. Speaking of the marked pathways, make sure you stay on them! Fjadrargljufur Canyon was closed after it was featured in a Justin Bieber music video which prompted massive tourism to the canyon, which threatened its environment. If you happen to veer off the marked paths, you will be warned in a not-so-friendly tone that you could face fines of up to $800 for crossing the barriers, so make sure you're following the rules!

It's a very picturesque spot and we overheard a few people saying they needed to pose for photos here because you know, you have to have this spot on your Instagram. "Gotta do it for the 'gram!" right? That seemed to be the phrase that pays at Fjadrargljufur Canyon.

Whether you've got weeks to explore or are on limited time like we were, Fjadrargljufur Canyon really is a must see. I mean, if it's cool enough for Justin Bieber, it should be worthy of your eyes too ;)

Your vacation trip is very cool, Theresa.

I agree with the government's determination to reduce excessive tourist visits to come to this beautiful location after using Justin Bieber's shooting.

    1. Thank you! I do think it was a good move on the government's part to close it down, though I feel sad that a few people had to ruin it for the tourists who would have respected the land while taking in its beauty.

    1. I could only pronounce Hella there. Everything else just looked like alphabet soup to me.

  7. Count on Bieber to ruin things for everyone.. LOL I agree with Dez, the name is impossible to pronounce and I won't even try. It does look like a gorgeous spot and it's crazy how old it is.

  8. If it is good enough for Bieber it usually means to run away haha but this place, can't even pronounce it, sure is a sight to see. Not worth getting an $800 fine to stray though.

  9. It's funny that people want to go where Bieber went, just to be there. It did look gorgeous in his video. It looks gorgeous here too. What a great place to spend some times, and these kind of souvenirs are priceless (the pictures and the memories).
