Theresa's Mixed Nuts: Sunset on Cliffs of Moher

Sunset on Cliffs of Moher

A visit to the Cliffs of Moher is an absolute must when traveling in Ireland. I know some people will want to spend hours admiring the views, but I actually planned our stop to fall later in the evening, closer to closing time. Like most of our road trip itinerary, we fell behind schedule and didn't arrive until about 30 minutes after the park closed, which was fine with me because you're still able to walk the grounds at your own risk. The cliffs close at 7pm, but because we were visiting in the summertime, we still had well over an hour to explore and take in the breathtaking views. Additionally, since there was nobody manning the entrance, we didn't have to pay an entrance fee and we got to enjoy our stay without the extra tour bus tourists milling around.

There's something very romantic about the way the soft glow of the sunset hits the cliffs! It's no wonder why Nora Roberts likes to use Ireland and its gorgeous cliffs in so many of her stories.

While you're supposed to stay on the path, we saw many people hop the wall to take photos in the grass with the cliffs as a backdrop. Allison told me I was being a creeper when I snapped a photo of this lovely couple getting their wedding photos done.

We were guilty of sneaking into the grass for a few snaps too though ;)

Even though it was mid-July, it gets really chilly at the top. I don't know if the temps are a bit better during the day (I actually found all of Ireland to be quite chilly while we were there, day and night) so I would highly suggest wearing jeans and taking a heavy sweater or light jacket on your visit. We had some wind to battle against also, but don't let that deter you from planning a stop. Once you're standing there all humbled by the cliff's beauty, the chill and wind will hardly register on your radar.

This one is my favorite with the moon finally starting to come out for the night.

There was a little pasture nearby filled with cows, so naturally the girls thought they were more interesting than the cliffs and had to go try and pet a few.

We did end up staying for about an hour and a half, and as you can see from the below pic that I took on our way out (roughly 9pm) there was still quite a bit of daylight left that we could have stayed a little longer if we wanted.

If you don't like crowds and don't mind not having all day to explore (or make a purchase in the gift shop) I'd say going to the Cliffs of Moher at sunset is the optimal visit time. If we do end up going back, I'll schedule our stop for right at sunrise or close to sunset again just because I really dug the laid back, quiet vibe you get during those hours.

  1. Thank you for the lovely post, Theresa! I long to visit Ireland. I didn't know about the Cliffs of Moher, but they're on my radar now. I don't care where I travel, I always take blue jeans and a sweater. If nothing else I wear them on the air plane flights to and from. I usually add a comfy pair of sweat pants to my suitcase as well. I take pictures of brides and grooms, too. I don't think you are a creeper.

    1. Glad I'm not the only creeper lol. I always have a pair of jeans and sweater too, though my flight clothes are usually a pair of leggings for comfort. You're like me. I don't care where I go, as long as I get to travel!

  2. Lovely photos of you and Jason! I think I'd lose ten pounds walking on those cliffs... I'm not much of a walker, hiker and climber. Were the cows pettable? :)

    1. The walk wasn't terrible at all! It's all smooth paths with just a few stairs to climb for better views. The cows totally ignored the girls lol. I guess they are used to stupid humans trying to grab their attention and have the art of ignoring them down pat.

  6. What a beautiful spot! I'd probably drive on our own. Then like you we could go whenever we wanted. I like how it was close to sun down.

    1. I hate sticking to other people's schedules, so I always try to book trips on our own too. I definitely think sunset and sunrise are the best times to see Mother Earth. We got some spectacular views in Iceland by doing early morning/late night traveling.

  7. These pictures are breath taking. This sounds like a trip of a lifetime. Do you have any Irish roots that influenced you in making Ireland your destination? I giggled at your daughters being more interested in the cows than the cliffs. I guess the fascination with animals doesn't disappear with age. lol If I had a choice & it was safe, I would definitely opt for the after hours viewing. I'm all about no entrance fees and no crowds!

    1. My husband's family is Irish, so it's always been a dream trip for him and our girls. We did learn that Mahoney has been anglicized, so now the girls like to say they are "fake Irish" lol.

No, we never really grow out of our fascination with animals, do we? I made my husband stop the car many times because I saw an animal on the side of the road I wanted to pet. It will surely be the death of me, chasing an animal I just want to make friends with lol!

  8. Wow! That's some place to visit. I can't believe your kids aren't really kids anymore. Sigh. Something to do with time and flying... Great pics, Theresa.

  9. Wow, such a great view indeed. Pffft. I've hopped plenty of fences haha lost count of the no trespassing signs I've trespassed on. I can blame the job for that. Bah, nothing wrong with being a creeper, just don't get caught. Cows may be interesting, but not when you have memories of your dog always sneaking off to roll in cow patties. Blah.

    1. Like Jason says, you can do anything until you get caught lol. Doggy rolling in cow patties, eh? New puppy spa treatment I haven't heard about before?

  10. These are great photos. I'd rather go without the throngs of tourists in the way too. We'd def. hop the fence to get the great pics as well. :) When we went to Ireland it was March, so it was definitely chilly. I like going when it isn't touristy season though.
