Indonesian-Style Tofu for the New Year

I have never been much of a fan of tofu. When I swapped my diet to a vegetarian one, I pinned quite a few tofu recipes, but nothing really screamed "wow" that I made. After that initial first few months, I decided it just wasn't something for me and haven't purchased it in over 2 years. Last week, on a whim, I picked up a package at the supermarket. With Chinese New Year still being celebrated, it's been decently priced so I figured I'd give it another try. I didn't turn to Pinterest this time, but looked to Golden Blossom Honey instead, since they are one of my favorite sources for recipes, and pulled up this Indonesian-Style Tofu recipe that sounded like something I could get behind.

Indonesian Tofu

This recipe does take a little planning on your part, since it does need to soak in the marinade overnight, so it's not one you can decide to make when you're short on time. But, the wait was worth it because this is the first tofu recipe that I can say that I absolutely loved. It had just the right amount of sweet and salty flavor that paired quite well with brown rice. Serve it up for Meatless Monday for a change, or just add it into your dinner plan if you are looking for low-fat dinner options. Either way, it's a keeper.

Ingredients
1 pound firm tofu, cut into 1 inch-thick slices
Drain between layers of paper towels for 30 minutes.
Marinade:
2 large dried shiitake mushrooms (about 1/4 oz), chopped
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 garlic clove, halved
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Sauce:
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 Tablespoon GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
1/4 teaspoon ginger

  1. Finding one that you enjoy is a win indeed. Guess the good tofu takes time to make.

  2. Maybe I'll try it. I'm not sure about tofu still...it's never been a golden buzzer hit for me, but it's been awhile. I'm willing to give it a try again. Thanks for the recipe.

    1. Tofu has always tasted like bland mush to me, so I do like how flavorful this one is. I do like it when we go to the restaurant and it's crispy, so I don't mind it there, it's just making it myself has never produced good results. Maybe I'll try it in the air fryer and see if it crisps up so I can start to enjoy it more.

  3. OMG you became Amazon influencer! :)
I usually do tofu breaded in breadcrumbs and sesame or I use it for stuffing stuff :) But I almost always use smoked tofu as it has flavour unlike the neutral one. Last week I made rolls with puff pastry stuffed with a few defrosted spinach brickets, garlic, an egg, vegeta and grated smoked tofu. I do generally always have a package of tofu in the fridge as it just saves you of coming up with a lunch once a week.

    1. I'm still working on that Amazon account, so it's pretty small right now. Maybe by Christmas I'll have it built up.

I'll have to look for smoked tofu because the stuff I buy just isn't cutting it. It's so flavorless and mushy. I don't mind it in my hot and sour soup, but to eat on its own has not been my favorite.

    2. Mushy? It is supposed to be hard like cheese and with similar texture. Try to find more variations in your healthy food stores if you have them :) But it is not a thing to eat raw, I don't know why do people even try. It is something that you ad to your cooked dishes.

    3. Well it’s not hard like cheese here. I buy it in the dairy section, but it’s packaged in water and I think that’s why it’s so soft. I’m going to try it in my air fryer and see if that changes the texture. I’ve had the crisper versions in our Indian restaurants and like it there, so maybe it’s something I’m doing wrong?

  4. I have to be honest, I've never liked tofu. This recipe has me rethinking it, though. I think I might have just had really horrible recipes. This looks great!

  6. Sounds like a great recipe. I actually love tofu, I just don't cook it much at all. I have to remember to buy FIRM because I've had some fails! However, the fact that this is a marinade, too, sounds like I could do this! I'll save and try!

  15. I'd totally try this! I don't buy tofu a lot, but some. I use the soft kind for smoothies, and the firm kind for dishes like you made.
