Jolly Rancher Poisoned Candy Apples

I find it funny that most of my friends on Facebook are constantly tagging me in their fun Halloween finds. All year long people are sending me suggestions for our annual Halloween party. My daughter recently found this Jolly Rancher hard candy recipe that she was dying for me to make. Some of you probably saw it floating around on your own Facebook walls at some point.

Reading through the comments, it didn't seem quite as simple as the title suggests. The candies would go back to a rock hard solid after cooling, which would make it difficult to bite through. Off to Google I went to find an alternative recipe that would make my daughter happy, while keeping her teeth in tact. It took me some time to hunt down a basic outline of how to make these because I had to sift through many suggestions of how to use melted Jolly Ranchers with marijuana. Yep, you learn something new every day. Thanks Google.

After a bit of reading, and some trial and error, I found a suitable recipe for these Poison Candy Apples made with melted Jolly Rancher Candy.

Jolly Rancher Candy Apples

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Unwrap 20 Jolly Ranchers candies, sticking with the same flavor for each. I used cherry on the red and green apple on the green. Place in an oven safe pan with 1/3 cup of corn syrup. Place pan in oven so candy can start to melt. After about 3 minutes, stir candy and return to oven for another 2 minutes, or until they are completely melted.

The above recipe called for edible glitter, which I couldn't find in my area. I did have some edible luster dust, which I immediately added to the melted mixture.

You can see the shiny sparkles from the luster dust here.

Insert 6 inch lollipop sticks into apples and either dip apples into mixture, or using a spoon, pour melted candy over apples.

Place apples on waxed paper and allow to cool.

*With the use of corn syrup, the Jolly Ranchers do not return to their completely hardened state. They now have a chewy gummy bear consistency.

*Yes, I took a healthy treat and *gasp* made it unhealthy with the use of candy. Sue me. It's Halloween time and is a treat, and should be eaten as such. Not every day.

The end result was just what my daughter was hoping it would be. A little messy to eat, but so delicious! A fun treat to serve up to your Halloween party guests!

  1. These look fun. I imagine that somehow eating one would make my insides glow in the dark. Very cool.

Marijuana and jolly ranchers?? WHY? I mean, why waste good...candy? Stupid potheads.

    1. THC infused candy because chemo makes you throw up and no one likes medicine that tastes like medicine, most people that use candies are not pot heads it gives a very different high than smoking it and has more benefits. Ok rant over. Was looking for a feasible recipe for the candy apples because I knew you couldn't actually eat them w just the melted candy. Thank you

    2. That's very interesting Hippy Chic! I didn't think about how it would be beneficial to the chemo patients. My dad was a pot head, so he just smoked the marijuana to ease those chemo symptoms for his cancer. I am sure if I ever need it myself, I'll go with the THC infused candy since I don't smoke :)

  5. I do love me a bit of sparkle on anything and everything :)
    Those apples do look gorgeous!
I've used melted hard candies to make glassy roses for decorating cakes a few times, but you have to form the leaves and petals while it's still relatively warm and you have to be quick.

    1. I made cupcake toppers out of hard candies, and you are right. They are quite difficult to work with since they cool and harden very quickly! A lot of people use them for making stained glass windows on gingerbread houses. That may be the easiest way to decorate with them since they don't really need shaped that way.

    2. ah, yes, you can also use them in biscuits and cookies: you cut a shape into the cookie, poor the melted candy and bake everything together and the cookie will have a seethrough heart or some other shape

    3. I love that idea. I may have to steal it for some Valentine cookies this year ♥

  45. So 20 of the candies makes enough for 6 apples, correct?

    1. Hi Aunt Penny,
It's been a while since I made these, but if I remember correctly, I used about 4 candies per apple, so 20 would cover about 5 apples, depending on the size of the apple. Hope that helps!

  46. I would definitely like to try this :)

  47. Be careful with hydrogen peroxide. Especially the undiluted varieties in the brown bottles. It can make your teeth extremely sensitive - I know this from first-hand experience. If you're careful, and you're teeth aren't already super-sensitive, go for it. Look on: gotoothache
