On one hand, I love the European's way of life. Life seems more relaxed, it's not all work, work, work, sleep, repeat. On the other hand, I really appreciate being able to grab a doughnut at any hour of the day here. I had grand dreams of waking up early in Paris, sitting at a little cafe, and eating Fresh Fruit Crepes for breakfast while I people watched. We did end up sleeping in on our second day in Paris, but finally got out the door around 8am to hunt down some breakfast. Our hotel was a 5 minute walk from the Eiffel Tower, so I thought there would be plenty of options to choose from, but we only came across 1 restaurant that was open that early and the girls didn't want anything that was on the menu. We started to walk back to our hotel and stumbled upon a little boulangerie with a small line out the door, so we had a peer in the window and were immediately salivating over the baked goodies beckoning for our attention. We ended up buying some croissants, beignets, and some French apple tarts that were so good, I almost cried when I took a bite. So, I didn't get my crepes, but bakery goodies more than made up for it.

On our walk to Notre Dame, we passed by Haagan Dazs where they were outside making these incredibly delicious smelling banana and chocolate hazelnut crepes topped with ice cream, and while it was a $15 dessert (yikes!), we did end up buying one to share. It was totally worth the cost!

I have never tried to make my own crepes before, with the exception of making them in our 8th grade foreign language studies class, but when we returned home from vacation I was still craving some crepes and was excited to find a Crepes with Fresh Fruit recipe right on Golden Blossom Honey's website.

Fruit Crepes

While I didn't have one of those fancy crepe makers like they do in France, I did make do with a small skillet and must say that they came out quite well. After blending the batter I was worried that it looked a little too thin and thought about adding in more flour to thicken it up a bit. I did a test run with the batter as prepared and it came out perfect on my first try. So DON'T add in more flour to the recipe. It's supposed to be runny! Make sure you are coating your pan with a little cooking spray before adding in more batter to get even results every time. Add in your summer fruits and roll up, maybe sprinkle on a little powdered sugar on top, and you'll be saying ooh, la la in no time.

  1. Yes, the batter for crepes is more runny than the one for pancakes. We don't have pancakes at all here, just crepes, which we make at home too. You can do them without eggs too, just water and flour, but they're not so tasty of course. They're always made in skillets with a bit of oil before every turn. In my country people usually spread some Euro Cream (our Nutella) over them, sprinkle with some ground cookies or they spread some jam in them. Sometimes they put bananas and cherries in them too.
15 bucks is a robbery! Were they made with gold?
As I don't like sweets, I prefer my crepes savoury :) You can make a batch of salty ones, fill them with some sauted shrooms, cheese and onions, roll them, bread them in eggs and breadcrumbs and fry them for dindins. We call those Gypsy crepes :)

    1. Oooh, Nutella cookie crepes sound so good. Gonna have to whip some of those up too! Or, put some cookie butter in them. The savory crepes sound yum also. I'd put some mushrooms in them too.

Not made of gold, but Haggan Dasz thinks their ice cream is made of gold, so they charge so much for it. Sadly, idiots like me will pay for it once in a while.

    2. There is also our local dish in which you stuff savoury crepes with soft cheese, place them tightly into a casserole, pour a cup of sour cream mixed with an egg over it and gratin the whole thing in the oven.

  2. Good tip on not adding more flour. Haagan Daz is always good, but also always expensive. I love that they were making crepes!! I think I'd rather have them at home though, because you can have a better fruit explosion like you did here!! These look divine!!

    1. It is mesmerizing to watch them make them on their little machines though, but you're right. I like controlling what goes into my crepes. And, saving a ton by not adding in ice cream lol

  3. Yes please! I love crepes! They are better for you than pancakes. I'd probably go with peaches for a topping right now considering I have a box of them from the fruit truck.

  4. Sure a different way of life by the sounds of it. Most everything is open here by 8, or before. Making your own is a win indeed.

    1. We can always find a 24 hour store or restaurant here, but that isn't happening in Europe. We needed meds because the rest of the family got sick in Ireland (don't know why it bypassed me) but the pharmacies didn't even open up until about 10-10:30 and closed by 6. It was so frustrating since we're used to getting anything we need at any hour of the day here.

  7. These look amazing! I love adding fresh fruit to pancakes or crepes. My husband loves adding honey to all foods - even having honey sandwiches - so we have it in the house at all times. I need to track down Golden Blossom Honey, though!
