Blue Hair, Don't Care

When I was a teen, I never asked my mom if I could alter my appearance. If I wanted to cut my hair, I cut it. When I wanted to wear makeup, I bought my own and never thought twice about her opinion. One year I decided I wanted to lighten my hair, but didn't have the cash for a box of dye, so I used a bottle of peroxide and a blow dryer. That was a pretty ugly mistake, turning my hair almost orange, hahaha! There were so many beauty disasters I committed to myself over the years, and I'm sure my mom bit her tongue- a lot! But bless her heart, she never once said anything negative to me about my mistakes.

My teen daughter is the complete opposite than I was at her age. It drives me nuts, but she asks my permission for Every. Little. Thing. Most of the time I say yes to whatever she wants, but when she asked to dye her hair blue, it was a big, fat, NO. Blue hair!? Seriously? You wanna run around looking like a Smurf? But, then I got to thinking- I wish this child would just live a little. Just dye her hair, and to hell with what I think. But, she's too reserved for that. I sat thinking that's how I would have handled it at her age, and how my mom wouldn't have said a word. (Ok, I would have gotten a LOOK, but not a peep would have come from her mouth). Really, it's her body, she has to live with it, so I went to Ulta and bought the Punky Colors blue hair dye.

While I couldn't fully commit to dying her whole head blue, I did the half on the underside of her head so it comes through as blue highlights.

Punky Colors Hair Dye, blue
Pardon the crappy photo. I swiped it from her Facebook page ;)

And I must admit, I actually like it!

Have you ever dyed your hair an unnatural color?

  1. It looks really cool. I have never done anything out of the ordinary, but maybe someday? As a side note, my nine year old asked for a mohawk and I told him over my dead body LOL.

  2. Looks charming, but as you say, only when it is in some parts, not dying the whole head blue like a Smurf :)

  3. It's the big trend. :) I bought my daughter a ton of hair chalk. So far that's keeping her happy, though she recently had the salon just cut all her hair off. I love her hair long, but like your mom, I bit my tongue and told her I love seeing her pretty face. And I do. :)

    1. We tried the hair chalk and it just came out as a disaster! I don't know if we did it wrong or what, but her hair felt really hard and yucky after applying it. Then it got all over when she brushed her hair. Maybe we bought a crappy brand?

  7. I see colored hair a lot where I work. It doesn't bother me. I have one student that had rainbow colored hair. I thought it looked kind of cool. I haven't ever died my hair anything wacky.

  8. No I haven't. I am not sure why, but I should try one day, I think it looks good on her hair.

  9. I've lost track of the number of hair colours my daughter's gone through but, you're right, it's just hair. If blue/orange/red/purple/black/yellow hair is the worst I have to deal with, I'll consider myself lucky.

  12. I colored my entire hair royal blue one time. Another time I dyed it blond with a big hot pink chunk. I don't think it hurts a kid to express themselves (safely). I think her hair looks good.

  13. Yeah she's young.. go wild and live a little!! ;p because once she starts work... blue hair could be a thing of the past (unless she works in the creative industries I guess). I had pink, blonde, red hair before.. now I just prefer plain old black.. easy to upkeep and work-friendly haha

  15. Hahhaha.... I am laughing at your beautiful mistakes. I think most of us can say we have been there done that. I see so many girls coloring their hair all colors of the rainbow.

  16. I like it. I've pretty much always let Elliott pick how he wears his hair, but so far he hasn't ever asked for a real dye job. We've done colored hair gel but that's it. :) He's also only seven, though... He has had everything from his head shaved, to almost down to his shoulders. I was not a fan of the longer hair, but he really wanted it that way in kindergarten. Ha. It became too much upkeep, though, He wasn't a fan of all the extra brushing that had to be done (it's a good thing he's a boy, because he certainly hates brushing and combing his hair). Right now he spikes it up and out most days. We've heard several comments about how much he looks like Flynn from Shake it Up on Disney channel with the current hairstyle.
