Theresa's Mixed Nuts: Bully Update!

Bully Update!

Most of you remember my bully post last week. The whole situation kept gnawing at me, and I ended up writing a letter to the school citing my concerns. I also wrote the bullied girl a letter, giving her my phone number and email address, should she need someone to talk to.

Monday I got a call from the girl's mother. I sat there and braced myself, waiting to get ripped into, but was pleasantly surprised that she actually thanked me for writing the letter to the school. It seems the mom has been trying to get a stop put to the bullying all year with no luck. It took my letter to get the ball rolling. The boys were suspended, and pending an investigation, could get expelled once it is proved they were physically violent with the girl. (Mom says they were.)

I am still not thrilled with the girl's home life, however, the teacher who was head of the trip has assured me that she put things in motion for the girl to get counseling. She has also provided the girl with her personal phone number to reach out to any time. Several teachers have also reached out to the mom and set up dates for after school activities they can do with the girl- trips to various places around town- that she normally would not have had the opportunity to explore otherwise.

So, no, I haven't saved them all, but I feel so good knowing that my small voice turned into a big one during that girls time of need. Just think of the impact we could have if we all put our voices together to make a real change!

  1. Thank god someone FINALLY listened. It's a shame that it took your letter to get them to listen, though, and that the mother's repeated concerns went ignored. That's awesome that the mom reached out to you and I hope the bullying ends once and for all now.

  2. If every person helped one person, oh what a beautiful thing it would be. :)

I'm so happy for that child, Theresa. And now the others stepping in, because you cared enough to speak up, will undoubtedly make an even bigger impact for that young lady. Big kudos to you for having a heart of gold and to the school for paying attention.

  5. most schools don't play around once they hear word of it. It's a shame some kids never tell anyone nor do any of their friends do anything about it.

  16. Congratulations on making a difference. It reminds me of the old story of the man picking up starfish on the beach and throwing them back into the water.

Someone said, "There are so many stranded starfish, how can you make a difference?"

He picked up a creature, threw it into the ocean, and said, "It made a difference for that one."
