Most of you remember my bully post last week. The whole situation kept gnawing at me, and I ended up writing a letter to the school citing my concerns. I also wrote the bullied girl a letter, giving her my phone number and email address, should she need someone to talk to.
Monday I got a call from the girl's mother. I sat there and braced myself, waiting to get ripped into, but was pleasantly surprised that she actually thanked me for writing the letter to the school. It seems the mom has been trying to get a stop put to the bullying all year with no luck. It took my letter to get the ball rolling. The boys were suspended, and pending an investigation, could get expelled once it is proved they were physically violent with the girl. (Mom says they were.)
I am still not thrilled with the girl's home life, however, the teacher who was head of the trip has assured me that she put things in motion for the girl to get counseling. She has also provided the girl with her personal phone number to reach out to any time. Several teachers have also reached out to the mom and set up dates for after school activities they can do with the girl- trips to various places around town- that she normally would not have had the opportunity to explore otherwise.
So, no, I haven't saved them all, but I feel so good knowing that my small voice turned into a big one during that girls time of need. Just think of the impact we could have if we all put our voices together to make a real change!
