Theresa's Mixed Nuts: Workin' It!

Workin' It!

A few years ago I got sick. Really sick. I dropped down to 100 pounds and stayed that way for 2 years. I have always had an athletic build, so being that small really bothered me. No matter what I did, I could not put the weight back on. So when I finally got my illness under control and the weight started coming back, I got excited. I just let it keep piling on, until one day I reached in the back of my closet for my fat pants and realized even those were getting a bit snug. I figured that it might be time to take advantage of the new health center that recently opened up in our area. I went down and signed the whole family up for a membership.

We have been taking advantage of the variety of classes they offer. Saturday is yoga. We have tried 2 classes and I have to ask- what's the appeal? I found the classes to be very boring. Yoga seems to be very popular, I don't understand what I'm missing? The Zumba classes have been a blast, but I will have to apologize to the instructor some day. She is so nice, but I say very mean things to her in my head for that 1 hour workout. The workouts kick my butt, I have an ugly dog face, red, sweat dripping in my eyes the whole time, can't breath, and she's up there sweating too, but it makes her look like she's glowing. She's still beautiful through the whole thing, and when she has the nerve to ask how we are all feeling, I want to show her my kickboxing skills.

The most impressive part of the gym is the pool. Allison has been very fond of the water slide. Mariah ventures off to the lap pool. Jason is big on the hot tub. I love the lazy river! I find walking it against the current gives the legs a fabulous workout! When I leave the pool I just want to belt out Alicia Key's "This girl is on fire!" because my legs are burning hotter than the seventh circle of Hell after a 30 minute walk. We are thinking about trying out the water Zumba and Pilates classes next.

Our gym offers a wide variety of classes. Are there any classes you recommend? What do you do to stay fit?

  1. That is a NICE pool! You guys are so lucky. I was a member at my local YMCA, but it's SO expensive to be a member there & I ended up joining another local gym that was half the price, but no pool.

As for yoga, I am with you - I don't get it, but I do zumba my ass off 5 to 6 times a week. I've been doing it for a year now and I always go to the same instructor, so I have her routines down pat now.

    1. Our local YMCA is really expensive too, unless you qualify for assistance. The yearly fees were really what stopped us from going there too. We pay $70 a month for a family membership, but get 1 hour of free babysitting a day, a free exercise class each day, unlimited pool, fitness center, rock climbing and gym court use. With no yearly fee. It is such a bargain!

I worry about learning the Zumba routine, then getting bored. Do they ever change it up and add new routines in?

    1. I have to slowly ease back into it too for health reasons. Exercising puts a strain on my body and will throw me right out of remission, and I don't want to be that sick again!

  3. I am lucky enough to live about a mile and a half from my gym and I love it. I go five days a week and it makes me feel so healthy mentally and physically. I mostly do cardio (elliptical and treadmill).

  6. I could really use a gym hitting again. With a pool like that, I'd be more motivated.

I gave you a Shout-Out on my blog today. :)

  7. That looks like a fancy pool! We belong to the Y. It's walking distance from our home. The boys are in swimming lessons. Mica's in Jujitsu. We do family gym. It's nice to work out as a family. Then my husband and I take turns working out, while the boys are in swimming lessons.

    1. I agree. It is nice to be able to go as a family. It really keeps all of us motivated to continue going. Jujitsu is one class I haven't seen them offer yet. Maybe they will add it into the summer rotation.

  10. I am at that point now where all my clothing is getting a little snug. I dropped to under 100 pounds and looked very sickly at one point. I see pictures of myself from then and just cringe.

Hahhahha.. had to laugh at you and your instructor... What is the saying. No pain, no gain.

  12. Good for you Theresa!! That looks like a great gym, especially the pool. I don't think we have a gym here with a waterslide!

  13. That looks like a great health center; and as for one-hundred pounds, I don't think I've seen that since middle school.

  14. I haven't ever gone to a gym because I like to work out alone at home. It's just a weird thing, maybe partly out of not wanting to drive to/fro. ;)

  15. WOW, look at that gym! I can't get over the pool/slide that is in there. That's so awesome! No wonder you guys enjoy going! I've never seen that around here...wish there was though!!

  16. That looks like a great gym! My husband is the only one that goes to the gym regularly. He just goes to the one on base before or after work 3-4 times a week. I really should get back in the habit of going more often, but it's 20 miles away, and I just struggle to find the time to make it work. So I just work out at home. I get my whole workout done in about the time it would take me to drive there and back.

  19. oh wow this looks like the place I would be in the whole day..everything in one place and in-door! When I was in college there was this health club facility just like that one, my friends and I used to go there on ladies day. We got half price! Now, I only exercise when I am not too tired (or too lazy) at home, doing Cardio Hip Hop from DVD. I used to run in the morning but now I use my morning to meet client and handling my work. Trying to take some times on Saturday morning or Sunday morning to compensate the running but weekend moods always kill the effort lol.
