Weekend Round Up~ Canoeing!

My husband has been on this kick lately where he thinks he wants to go kayaking. No, we've never been, but he has it stuck in his head that this is going to be a family fun activity that we should take up.  Our state park offers all kinds of boat and canoe rentals, so just to get a feel of being in the water and paddling, my husband decided to drag us there Saturday to test out the waters, so to speak.

Now, if he is trying to sell me on the idea of kayaking, he picked a pretty crappy day to do it on. The first mistake being it was over 100 degrees out. Then he thinks it's brilliant to put me in a canoe with the 8 year old. I've never rowed a boat. I'm not the most savvy outdoors girl there is. But sticking me with a 50lb 8 year old is a sure fire way to guarantee I'm not getting too far. We end up rowing in circles over and over again. Eventually I give up, fling the paddle aside, and sing Row Row Row Your Boat while simultaneously praying a big gust of wind pushes us back to shore. By the time we got back to the dock I was exhausted and soaked from sweat. This is not an adventure I would like to repeat on a weekly basis, that's for sure!

Have you ever been kayaking? Canoeing? Is there much of a difference between the two? Is one easier than the other?

  1. I've always been intrigued with kayaking but don't know if I'd actually ever do it...for fear of flipping over and being stuck in the kayak under water LOL. It sounds like it would have been fun if the weather had been a little cooler and if you had better assistance paddling hehe. Love the pictures and the fact you gave up and sang Row Row your boat haha ;)

    1. That's my fear too! I don't want to flip! Jason found a group sign up for an 11 hour trail. Um, where and when do you stop to pee? That's another fear, having to use the bathroom and being stuck in a kayak.

  2. I bet you would of enjoyed it more if it wasn't 100 degrees. It's so much fun to try new things. I have done both. Which one is easier? Hmmm...I would say kayaking by yourself or canoeing with a strong partner.lol!

    1. I agree, I love trying new things. I told my husband we'd go back in September and give it another go when it's a bit cooler out.

I would also have to think kayaking is a bit easier too. It seems a lot more lightweight and easier to control than a big metal canoe.

  3. Theresa you make me laugh!!! I've never been in a kayak. My sister has one and has asked me to go with her since my son has one I could borrow. I did not accept this invitation because I'm too afraid lol.

    1. I certainly wasn't laughing on Saturday, but thinking back now, it was pretty funny. If you ever decide to take your sister up on the kayaking, let me know how it works out for you. I have a feeling I'm going to be sitting in one a lot sooner than I would like, if my husband gets his way.

  4. LOL! I love it when hubby gets things stuck in his head. Mine currently thinks we should go paddle boarding....I am somewhat outdoorsy but paddle boarding holds zero interest for me. If I'm going to be on the lake I better have a fishing pole in my hand.

    1. I have a feeling if he likes kayaking, paddle boarding probably won't be far off. When he suggests it, I'm sending him your way. Our husbands can do it together and leave us out of it lol.
