The Secret To Getting A Clean House

I have finally found the secret to getting your house clean. What's the secret? Lose something! Yes, it's that simple.

For the life of me, I can not figure out what possessed my husband and I to buy our 8 year old the smallest ipod they make. Twice this year she has lost it. This time she spent 2 days combing the house for it. Finally in frustration, I told her we were dumping everything on her floor so she would have to look at every item in her room. As we were going through things, I decided to take the opportunity to start ridding her room of toys no longer played with.

Sure enough, the ipod was not in her room. We had to move on to her sister's room and the game room. Now I am not in the mood to look for the ipod. I've got the cleaning/decluttering bug. After about 4 hours of picking through toys- what to keep, what to donate, what to pass down to younger sister or cousins, we amassed a huge pile to get rid of.

This does not include the bags we sent home with cousins. I figured that since I got those 3 rooms, why not continue through the rest of the house? So, this week, all because of a lost ipod, my house is going through a major spring cleaning. I guess it's more like summer cleaning now though lol.

So, if you are looking for good house cleaning tips, my suggestion is- Lose Something!

By the way, we did find the ipod.

You should also know that it is a magic ipod. Since both of my girls claim they did not put it there, it totally walked over to the stool, lifted the lid, crawled in, then put the lid back on itself. Very impressive!

How often do you do a major home declutter?

  1. LOL you're so right on that! I've done the exact same thing with my house. It always starts with me looking for something in particular, and then winds up with me cleaning out the whole house. I agree....lose something ;)

    1. I know! I guess it's because you get frustrated digging through other stuff looking for that one thing, you figure you'll save yourself the headache for next time. Then the clutter piles right back up again. It's a vicious cycle!

    1. Procrastination at it's finest lol. Some of those toys have been collecting dust since Mariah was 6. So, I'd say it's been about 7 years since we've done a major declutter. It was much needed!

  3. So funny! Thankfully we just moved a year ago, so we haven't collected that much clutter since then, but I'm really afraid that will change soon ;-)

  4. Hahah, that is so true. Whenever something is misplaced, we clean the house, and never fail to find it!

    1. I swear, my house gets the messiest when we really aren't here! We run in, dump stuff of, then go go go! Then come home to huge piles to clean. I hate that!

  7. Looks like your hunt for the iPod turned to a more serious task! I remember when I also misplaced my phone’s headset. I searched the entire house, but I still couldn’t find it! What I did was I de-clutter the whole house, and there I found it, underneath my kid’s toy box. From one perspective, it’s also a good thing that I misplaced something because it led me to clean the whole house, just like what you did! Haha.

  8. You never know, it might be that Steve Jobs invented a walking iPod and then passed it off to your daughters before he died. Haha. Kidding aside, it’s good that you got rid of things that you no longer use already. Not only will you have a cleaner and more organized home, you were also able to help others by giving them the objects you don’t need anymore.
