Living With A Bully, A Tattletale, and A Thief

Once I became a mother, one of my main goals was to raise caring, respectful children. According to my kids teachers and other adults who come in contact with them, I've gotten the impression that I have accomplished that goal. I've become smug about it. I relish in the thought that I do know a thing or two about parenting. Imagine my surprise when I found out I have been raising a bully, a tattletale, and a thief. That's right. In the past 3 months I've had that smug grin wiped right off my face. The culprits aren't my human kids though. They are my fur children. We decided it was time to add to our family and adopted our boxer pups. They are 6 months old now and their personalities are really coming through. Our female Adrian has decided that any bones or chew toys are hers and hers alone. Our male Rocky can't touch anything. Here she is chewing on her rawhide while sitting on top of his. If he comes close she will snap at him so he sits on the stairs and whines until someone comes and helps him out.

Then there is Wrigley, our pug. Wrigley is a rescue dog. She spent her whole life in a cage for puppy mill purposes. It took her forever just to figure out what a dog treat was, and trying to teach her play has become useless. After 3 years of trying to get her to play with toys we've given up. This, however, does not stop her from stealing the toys from the other 2. She doesn't know what a toy is, but by golly if she sees Rocky and Adrian with one you can bet she is going to find a way to take it from them. Of course she doesn't know what to do with it once she gets it, but it obviously must do something great if the other two want it so bad.

So now I am thinking it's time to start looking into dog obedience training. If anyone has some good sites to recommend, I'm all ears. I'm hoping we can get a little harmony amongst the dogs before the new year sets in. Wishful thinking? These dogs are destroying all of my parenting credibility! On a brighter note, Allison did just get an award at school for citizenship, so if all else fails, I will revert back to this photo and remember the days when I did do something right.

  6. Oh fur babies can be such a challenge. We have four big fur babies. They make more of a mess than my two year old. Be consistent with them is my best advice :D
